If you're a glass half-full guy: it's another pitch in the arsenal.
If you're a glass half-empty guy: it's a sign of how much his fastball is losing speed (that he feels he needs a third pitch).

What's wrong with a pitcher looking for a new pitch to throw? Why wait until he really can't throw an effective fastball? More pitches in he arsenal can only lengthen his career...if he can throw them effectively.

Well, he's been tinkering with it for a while. Hey, I'm a glass half-full guy on this one. I can't blame him for hitting the big 4-0 and deciding he can't throw it by people any more. Certainly beats the alternative of Schilling giving up a lot of gopherballs because he's throwing an 89mph fastball down the middle. Most athletes (at least the smart ones) realize that, as they age, they have to get by more on their accumulated knowledge than on their physical attributes.
