I am interested in your perspective on these two guys.......
Craig Hansen was touted by some to be the Sox closer of the future. He appeared in 19 games between Portland and Pawtucket in 2006 where he was charged with developing pitches other than his mid-to-high 90's fast ball (as memory serves). Later last year he appeared in 38 games for the Sox sporting a 6.63 ERA over 38 innings with 5 HRs and 30 SOs.
Manny Delcarmen was touted by some as being the best pitcher for the Sox to come out of West Roxbury evah. He appeared in 10 games for the Sox pitching 9 innings in 2005 and then 50 games in 2006 pitching in 53 innings sporting a 5.06 ERA with 2 HRs and 45 SOs.
what do you think about these 2 guys and their role/prospects for 2007?

I think having Farrell and a new bullpen coach will help these guy immensly. Nip and Wallace were more veteran's coaches. The new guys are more geared toward devellopment as a lot of new pitching prospects will be hitting the bigs this later this year and next year.
Either Hansen or Delcarmen will start the season in Pawtucket. (There's an outside chance that they both will start in Boston depending on Timlin's health.). I think that as the proverbial wheat gets separated from the chaff during the season you'll see both on the BoSox in August.
Who will be more effective? IMO I think Delcarmen will have the better year. He has better command of his pitches and while he's not going to light up the radar gun, he will get the outs. Hansen is more of a thrower than a pitcher right now. He needs a little more seasoning in AAA but will make an impact during the pennant race.

Just aggravates me to have Hansen be called the "closer of the future", when the Sox could really use a closer of the PRESENT.

no fear JD
Hanson starts the season as PawSox closer and comes up MAy 15th and starts closing for the RedSox June 1st if Pinero is struggling
He starts throwing his offspeed pitch again, gets it under control and returns to save the year with his new confidence

Dude, have you seen Pinero pitch?
I know it's only Spring Training but I've seen him pitch in two games already and he does not have good command of any of his pitches. He's got a 15.00+ ERA. Now, again, it's still early but he's not ready for prime-time.

Did I hear correctly on the radio that Piniero was one of the AL's worst starters last season?
Sounds like he won't be much use, aside from making us forget about Tavarez and Seanez...

All I seem to remember is his ERA climbed something like a run a year for the last few seasons
I think spring trraining means nothing Old School - Foulke stunk the joint out in '04 correct and some wanted Williamson to close out of camp

Yeah, but Foulke was brought in as a closer and was a closer for the A's. Pinero has no closer experience and was moved to the bullpen halfway through last season.

Yeah, but Foulke was brought in as a closer and was a closer for the A's. Pinero has no closer experience and was moved to the bullpen halfway through last season.but if his early success wasn't so dramatic, the Mariners had plans for him to closer. It was a difficult decision to make either way and who knows maybe he has two effective pitches and it was his lack of a 3rd that the league caught up to him.
OK, I am just a Homer hoping for the best
