Our over payed, under worked, out of shape "Ace" takes the mound tonight trying to pitch the Sox to a sweep of the halos. He needs to step up. I'm tired of his excuses and I'm tired of him cashing his checks without doing anything to earn them. IF (and that is still a big IF) the Sox are still in the playoff hunt then tonight the Josh Beckett that the Sox are paying for needs to take the mound and pitch like it's 2007.

WIN!!!!

Saltalamacchia is now on the dl. He has a leg infection. Warning, just being traded to the Red Sox is dangerous. Dusty Brown has been called up.

And in the more good news category, Pedey is a scratch tonight. Lowrie will play second and bat second.

Josh needs to show he belongs here.

Josh could end this season with 8 consecutive perfect games and overall he would not have earned his salary for this season. He could use the rest of the year to begin to show he belongs here, but that is not an argument he can win me over with by the end of this year -- in my eyes, he will continue to be a question mark into 2011 regardless.

Unrelated sidenote: I hate John Lackey.

The scariest part is next year the two highest paid Red Sox pitchers will probably be the number 4 and number 5 starters. Not exactly a good allocation of funds.

Why do you hate Lackey?

A friend of mine is a Rangers fan and he was so sad to see Lackey go because he "looks forward to the Rangers beating Lackey 4 or 5 times a year." And that's my primary reason -- I think Lackey is terrible. Which leads us to my second reason: We have a huge percentage of our team payroll devoted to paying someone who is terrible.

The third reason (the big one) would be his attitude. I love to see baseball players who are passionate out there, but his passion is so freakin' misguided. We could be up 7-0 and he gives up a seeing-eye single, and it's temper tantrum time for Lackey. M*****-F***** this, M*****-F***** that, G** D** it, etc. etc. You see this on-camera enough, but go to a game he's pitching and you'll see it off-camera a ton, too. What is that? Do you think no one will ever get a hit off of you? Are you infallable? Sportsmanship much? Save that energy for pitching! I swear, that's our next team injury: Lackey hurts himself throwing a hissy fit. If it's a tie game in the 7th and you allow a go-ahead run, that's one thing. But you, sir, are a whiny little baby. I have seen him do that for things as mundane as pitches called outside that move the count to 2-1. Seriously? Is it news to you that sometimes the umps squeeze you? If I was an ump, I would, because I've never seen anyone burst a blood vessel in their head before, and I think that would be an interesting thing to see in person. I think he learned that crap from Scioscia; that guy is guaranteed to go yell at the ump 4 times a game, even with his team blowing the opponents out. (I guess Reason #4 would kind of be I hate the Angels, if that makes any sense).

Oh, and he looks like he fell from a great height directly onto his face. Does that count?

I was very upset the day we signed him. VERY upset.

The scariest scariest part is in all fairness next year the two highest paid pitchers in the organization should be the number 1 and number 2 starters in triple-A, but won't be, because contracts determine what professional level a player plays at, not talent.

Across the street from my house is an AT&T store where a man claiming to be Beckett's high-school catcher in Spring, Texas works. He says he still talks to Beckett every couple of weeks or so and that he got his nephew Beckett's and Papi's autographs.

Now you can believe his story or not. I have no reason not to. Pretty cool.

5.5 out of the WC. At what point exactly is this team going to make their move?

On a serious note, do you think thee is any creative way to trade Josh Beckett in the off-season? Or do you think he can ever get in the kind of shape where he can pitch more than five innings without falling apart?

On a serious note, do you think thee is any creative way to trade Josh Beckett in the off-season? Or do you think he can ever get in the kind of shape where he can pitch more than five innings without falling apart?heard Gammons talking about Josh...he is a hard headed Texan but he also likes to be the Ace, a badge he wears with much pride. Peter talked to Josh on tuesday and told him he will be ripping him the next few days and asked if there was any medical issue. Beckett claimed to be healthy and it is just a location issue more than anything.

BUT

the good news is, according to Gammons, that this is the type of event that will lead Josh to call up Farrell the day the season ends and get whole heartedly into the Red Sox offseason program, something he has failed to put 100% into. Maybe this is exactly what you are talking about, and while it does no good this year we can hope Beckett re-discovers himself much like Shilling did on several occassions during his career

Whoever that "Thuuuuh MFYs win" dude is, was talking about the Red Sox pwnage of the Angels during the Detroit game yesterday morning. "Yeah, the Angels won the playoff series last year, but that's the exception to the rule."

I'm pissed off about yesterday's loss, because I don't think the Red Sox have much of a chance with only two of their five rotation cylinders consistently firing. If they could count on decent starts from three of the five, and have the other two be up and down, they could average two out of three from here on out and still pull this thing off.

Of course, when they do get a reasonable first six innings out of Matsuzaka or Lackey, they need to stop coughing it up in the last three. That's a different conversation, though.

imagine if the playoffs started today that Lester, Buchholz and DiceK would be 1, 2, 3 with a coin flip for teh 4th starter...hell look at Wake at this point

SamBam39

Yet they are still 5.5 games out of a playoff spot and every time they take two steps forward they take a step backward. This is not a team that inspires confidence in their ability to overtake the Rays or the MFY's.

it is more of a 'let's hope the yanks or rays fall apart' type of team

WHich is why it seems like a lost cause to me. It depends more on whether or not other teams fall apart, more than it depends on the SOx to get on a win streak. Sad...just sad.
