That's great, it starts with an losing streak, strikes and balls, a grandslam-
Tito Francona is not afraid. Eye of a Papelbon, listen to your gut churn -
'pen serves its own needs, regardless of your own needs. Feed it up a bat,
speed, grunt no, strength no. Minor structure clatter with fear of height,
down height. Hit on a wire, represent the seven games in a bullpen by committee
and a bad Idea. Left Field, wasn't coming in a hurry with the furies
breathing down your neck. Team by team reporters baffled, ump, coaches
flop. Look at that low strike! Fine then. Uh oh, overflow, population,
common group, but it'll do. Save yourself, serve yourself. Nation serves its
own needs, listen to your heart bleed. Tell me with the rapture and the
reverent in the right - right. You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright
light, feeling pretty psyched.

We are losing to a last-place team that recently traded away any glimmer of talent it had in its organization.

I think the nine players on the field now won a "Cleveland Indian for a day!" contest with the Ohio state lottery.

I'm sure there weren't any Indians fans crying over Pedroia, Varitek, Martinez, Beckett, Ellsbury, Lowell, Cameron et al.I understand that you are not in the best of moods these days. Neither am I as I see the season slipping away. At times like this, I'd like to see the entire yankee team get pilots licenses. I think the difference between Santana's injury and those suffered by our guys is that his injury will take much much longer for recovery and it really could impair his ability to perform. To see that happen to such a young prime prospect is very sad. It was sad when it happened to Fisk. I am sure all baseball fans were saddened by what what happened to Ryan Westmoreland.

I don't care if they cry, but I would care if an opposing fan was that benign about an injury of that caliber though.

When A-Rod pulls a hamstring and can't play against the Sox, that's one thing... When a highly-touted catching prospect of a rebuilding, bottom-feeder team suffers what appears to be a career-threatening injury?

I'm with you on this one, Stan. In addition, I found the need for NESN to dwell on the injury with close-ups and replays to be a bit much as well.

On the upside, here's some encouraging (I hope) news.

BOSTON -- Catcher Carlos Santana will undergo an MRI on his left knee in Cleveland on Tuesday after he was involved in a violent collision at home plate in the Indians' 6-5 victory over the Red Sox on Monday night at Fenway Park.

"He tested well with the trainers, meaning they don't feel he has any serious damage -- his ACL or anything like that," manager Manny Acta said. "He is leaving tomorrow for Cleveland to get an MRI."

couple things

Santana is a converted 3rd baseman with a cannon of an arm, only has played catcher for 3 seasons I think and was still learning the position. His placement of his leg/foot appears to be incorrect. If you watch Tek he squares his hips up with 3rd base and keeps a bend to the knee so teh hyper-extension is less likely to happen

that is all well and good but I can say a great throw to the catcher to make the play, an amazing ability to hold onto the ball as the knee bends ugly and I hope Santana has a bit of Tedy Bruschi rubber legs going on and is only minimally hurt

The thing about that play is that you see catchers do that all the time. What you DON'T see anymore is a Pete Rose/Ray Fosse-like incident occur because runners try to get around the catcher's leg almost always nowadays.

The play was perfectly clean. The result was almost* tragic.

*still could be, despute SamBam's expert opinion on knee injurues

SamBam39
08-03-2010, 03:43 PM
3PS. Tragic?????? A bit melodramatic no? Tragic is the guy dies, or loses his leg. Tragic isn't "Oh no I can't play baseball anymore. I can't earn millions". Sorry, IMO that isn't tragic.

And believe it or not I used to be an athletic trainer. So my "opinion" is actually based a little bit on experience.

3 Point Stan
08-03-2010, 03:47 PM
SB, it's amazing to me that you could give two shits about an injury that "appeared" like that considering how much you wear your heart on your sleeve around here.

And congrats on being a trainer - I used to be a baseball player and went out cuz of injury. I don't want to see anyone get hurt badly.

Have a nice day.

Ryan Kalish, in addition to being a very good prospect, is a good dude. He went over to the Cleveland clubhouse after the game to speak with Carlos Santana and wish him well with his knee injury. Not every player would do that.
