The season is just a little more than 40% over. I think we have enough of a sample size to evaluate the off season pick-ups. What did you expect from these guys? Who has performed to your expectations, who has disappointed, who has been a surprise?

Lackey - C-. This was my favorite move. I thought Horseface would add a solid three to the rotation. So far, he's been mediocre. I expected at least better command and some dominance. He looked better in his last start.
Maybe he'll be strong going forward.

Cameron - Incomplete. I scratched my head at this signing. Why get older up the middle? Did the Sox know about his hernia before signing him? He's looked ok at the plate in the few games that he has played. But he has no burst speed and will likely be hampered by his injury for the rest of the season. So far,a waste of $15.5 Mill.

Beltre - B. A move I was not sold on, especially when the Lowell trade to Texas blew up. He's a career .270 hitter with a .320 OBP.. He's on fire right now, but I expect he won't hit over .300 and he will not hit more that 25 jacks. Flashes of defensive brilliance, but he's made some really bonehead plays and has a wild arm.

Scutaro - B+. I wanted the Sox to resign Alex Gonzalez. But I understand why they went with this guy. He's really a second baseman. He has slowed down, his range is only adequate, and his arm is not strong. However, he's patient at the plate and gets on base. That's why he's the guy until Iglasias (sp) arrives in 2012.

Hermida - C. This guy is just awful defensively and other than some big hits with RISP, he's a disappointment. I'm glad he's here in light of the injuries to our outfield.

Hall - B-. This guy has been living near the Mendoza line for several years.
He is versatile, but has marginal skills at the 6 so I hope Scutaro can stay on the field. It's hard to say that he has been anything other than effective. Particularly in Center. Again, with the outfield depleted, I'm glad he's here. He's been showing some pop recently and he's over .250. All bonuses.

McDonald - B. This guy was not on my radar until he was called up from Pawtucket. He plays good D in both center and left. He runs well, and has had a bunch of productive at bats. This was a good depth signing. Good thing too. It will be interesting to see what happens when Ellsbury and Hermida return.

Bonser - Incomplete. I'm not a fan of reclamation projects. Yet I'm pulling for this guy. The Sox did not really address the bull pen to my satisfaction (why they did not retain Siato is still a mystery to me) so he better show something soon.

The Bag Of Suck - D-. This bag includes Showenweiss, Nelson, and Atchinson. Other than the emergency start by Atchinson the other day, nothing good has come from these moves.

What do you think?

(Lackey B-) I liked the Lackey acquisition a lot. How could I not like taking a competitor's ace. He has not looked like an ace thus far. He rarely pitches a clean inning. There have just been too many base runners. That being said, I'm hoping that he is a second half guy and puts up lots of quality starts.

Cameron-(Incomplete) The Cameron move baffled me also due to his age. However, it was pointed out to me that he is a good road player, and in the past few years we have stunk on the road. He probably would have played a solid role had he not been injured. I don't see him lasting through the season or playing a meaningful role with this hernia.

(C-) Hermida sucks. I knew that he had occasional power, but I had no idea how terrible he is in the field.

(B+) Scutaro- Getting him did not thrill me. I was worried that his offensive season in 2009 was a one-year thing. He looks pretty solid with the bat so far, and his fielding is average but adequate. However, now he has a disc issue in his neck. That's a bitch. I know people that have had that. It can be very incapacitating and the lack of a viable infield backup can't be helping the situation.

I have to wonder why our docs never spot this stuff before we sign guys- Scutaro's spine, Cameron's hernia. More to come

Too early to rate any of these guys. Way too much baseball left to be played.

Hermida is this years attempt to find the next David Ortiz - a player from a differnet team that may explode onto the scene when brought to fenway

still early but he is a DH/fill in OF at best

Lackey C+ Decent but not worth the money. Is supposed to be a better second half pitcher. Let's hope so, Sox will need him.

Beltre A Other than his innate ability to crush left fielders he has been a damn solid player so far.

Hermida incomplete Ribs took away too much playing time.

Cameron C for his play on the field and an A for effort. I don't think any of us know how much pain he is in. But he has given it a valiant effort. It would be nice to get Ellsbury back so he could take some time.

Scutaro B He has been pretty much as advertised. Solid, if unspectacular.

Bill Hall B The super sub is much more valuable when he doesn't play right field. ;) But, he has done a nice job and has been an important contributor with all the injuries.

McDonald A against expectations B in general. One of the big surprises of the season and a big help with the injuries in the outfield. Hope he has found a home.

Scott Achison B- He has a 1.11 WHIP in 19 appearances. He has been better than some in that bullpen.

And I think that is all that is left.
