According to Gammons th eSox brass has asked Petey if he could do it and he is up for the challenge, siad the last time he tried it he was 20 lbs heavier and too plump but now could do it...
.... does this mean the Sox would/could be after taking on an Uggla type of Contract as part of a bigger trade with someone like the Marlins?

I don't like this. I think Petey is a very good second baseman. Why screw with that? I'm afraid they could end up hurting themseves at 2 positions.

He was drafted as a SS wasn't he? Don't know what the big deal is if he gets moved there.

He hasn't played it in a while. Just because he was drafted from College as a SS doesn't mean he can play it in the pro's. A lot of players change positions after they get drafted to what their skillset translates in the pro game. The concern with Petey would be primarily his range at SS.

Never seemed like he had an MLB shortstop arm on those rare occasion he relayed throws to the plate but who knows. I'd much rather see them get a real SS than to take a great 2B and shift him just for the sake of sticking a good 2B in there.

1) If David Eckstein can play SS with his arm, anyone can.
2) Nick Green has a cannon, but cant field the position.
I dont know if i like this or not, but im guessing that its a flexability thing. Theo just wants to explore all possibities. Maybe if they get Beltre to play third, Pedroia wouldnt be expected to be all world at SS, just solid.
Placido Polanco anyone? Using UZR, he was actually a little better at 2nd with the glove than Pedroia last season, and can hit some. An infield of Yooks, Polanco, Pedroia, and Beltre would be pretty decent, defensively.
EDIT: And i just read that the Tigers declined arbitration on Polanco, so signing him costs no draft picks :)

Given his work ethic, I'm sure he would become a fine ML SS in a reasonable amount of time. Him playing short wouldn't worry me at all.
I'd rather he play second obviously but as SC said it gives them options. I wouldn't move him there just do it. Seems to be more good 2B's attainable than SS's

Three 2nd basemen who are FA are the aforementioned Polanco, Orlando Hudson (2009 NL GG winner) and Filipe Lopez. None of the three would require a draft pick as compensation, and all three could probably be had for a short term contract, maybe a 1 year deal.
Also, if the Sox FO wants to pretend that defense doesnt matter they could make a trade for Dan Uggla.

I suspect that this switching of Pedroia's position is a stop gap measure for a season due to financial reasons. It was in the paper the other day that John Henry's business has had to lay off employees and solicit less wealthy people as customers. I think that we will see one high profile free agent and the rest of the restocking will be of lower profile players. Hope that I am wrong but my guess here would not surprise me.

While im sure JH's financial situation comes into play in every roster decision they make, i think in this situation its just that there is more value in the second base market. For the money it would take to sign Marco Scutaro, they could probably sign Orlando Hudson AND Placido Polanco. And neither of these guys would probably require a 3 year commitment, as Scutaro is suposedly looking for.
Ultimately i would file this under Turning Over Every Rock. Im sure if the Sox had the opportunity to sign an A+ SS and 2ndbaseman, Theo would ask Pedroia if he thought he could learn to play LF. :)

Shilling talked about Pedrioa playing short and claims Petey is dropping size to get quiclker, that Petey will catch everything and while not a cannon of an arm he is accurate and that makes up for it in a way
he claims by the end of the season he has no doubt Petey will be a very good SS

Shilling claimed Orlando Hudson
so it makes sense Paul Rubillo agrees
Hudson also drawing interest from Sox (http://www.hotstove.com/2009/12/weei-com-red-sox-looking-at-orlando-hudson/)
