...in the most craptacular way possible, with the Angels finishing off the Rangers at 1am.

The Sox didn't back up into the playoffs. They oozed.

The Red Sox didn't back into anything. They put their work in and won games in September while Texas coughed up game after game. The fact that the Red Sox have been able to shut it down over the last 2 weeks and give games away isn't their fault, and it is smart baseball on their part. Why play all out and risk injuries in essentially meaningless games?
I couldn't care less if Francona picked 25 people out of the stands before each game to suit up for the Red Sox from this point on. Bring on the Playoffs!

I disagree. We were 0.5 games out of first place on August 3rd. We have lost ten games in the standings to the Yankees since then. Just because it's a given that we'll get the wild card over a team as historically pathetic as the Rangers doesn't mean we should be happy to settle for it. One thing is certain -- the MFYs will enter the playoffs having not forgotten how to win games.
I subscribe to your theory only after the Yankees officially clinched, and not a day before.

If losing five in a row and seven out of the last nine games you played before finally making it doesn't qualify as backing in ... then what does?

Thank you! This is textbook backing into the playoffs.

Maybe the Sox will lose 8 out of the next 19 and win the world series :)

If they do that, I give you my word right here and now that I will not accuse them of backing in to a championship.
