Ramirez planned to attend car show

By HOWARD ULMAN AP Sports Writer

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Manny Ramirez, who received permission from the Red Sox to report late to spring training for family reasons, was scheduled to attend a car auction in New Jersey on Saturday, according to the promoter of the auction.

It wasn't immediately clear if the team was aware of Ramirez's scheduled appearance at the Atlantic City Classic Cars Auction. Boston's first full-squad workout is Thursday. Under the collective bargaining agreement, the deadline for players to report to camp is next Tuesday.

Earlier Wednesday, Boston general manager Theo Epstein said Ramirez has an excused absence and will report on March 1 for the second straight year. On Monday, pitcher Julian Tavarez, Ramirez's close friend, said the slugger's mother recently had surgery and Ramirez was with her in Florida.

But later Wednesday, Ramirez's plans to appear at the car show surfaced in a report posted on The Boston Globe's Web site. It said Ramirez's mother's condition might prevent him from attending — and it wasn't known when the appearance was initially scheduled.

But Louise Cunningham, who works for G. Potter King, the Berlin, N.J., car dealer promoting the auction, told The Associated Press that Ramirez was still expected at the event.

"All we know, he's coming at noon on Saturday, nothing else," she said.

Ramirez is a collector of classic cars. His 1967 four-door Lincoln Continental Sedan convertible is listed in Saturday's auction as number 1747A. In parentheses on the auction list is a note: Owned by Manny Ramirez.

Earlier Wednesday, after Boston's other position players underwent physicals and did conditioning runs, Epstein said he had spoken Tuesday with Ramirez's agent, Greg Genske. Epstein also said manager Terry Francona had talked with Genske and Ramirez.

"The communication was actually pretty good," Epstein said. "I think the most important thing is just accountability starting March 1 from then on out."

Epstein made no mention of the car show. Neither Epstein nor Genske returned e-mails seeking comment.

"He's got a family situation," Epstein said. "I think the important thing from our perspective at this point is when he does show up on March 1 that he's ready to go, accountable to his teammates, accountable to the organization."

Francona said Wednesday, "it's a family issue."

Ramirez asked to be traded after the last two seasons and was the subject of trade talks at the July 31 deadline in 2005. He also missed most of the final six weeks last season with what the team called right knee tendinitis. There was speculation he was physically able to play.

The car auction is scheduled for Thursday through Sunday at the Atlantic City Convention Center. It includes a 1,200-car auction, a swap meet, a "muscle car" showcase and an antique sale with cars starting at $50,000 minimum bid.

Ramirez is scheduled to make $18 million this season, the seventh of his eight-year, $160 million contract.

"It's a two-way street," Epstein said. "There's a certain amount of accountability that's expected. That's the way it's going to be going forward."

Ramirez has performed well on the field in his six seasons with the Red Sox, with at least 33 homers and 102 RBIs each year.

"Manny's still crazy," teammate David Ortiz said Wednesday with a big smile. "I'm still baby-sitting him.

"Things happen, man. It's not something that you can really control. His mom had surgery a while back. I'd be doing the same thing if I still had my mom alive and she got sick. I'd be trying to be with her."

What an absolute turdball.

They haven't even started spring training and already he's pulling this crap? His "mom is sick" turns into a frigging car show that he's doing for money? When he's CONTRACTUALLY SUPPOSED TO BE IN SPRING TRAINING?

I'm sorry, I don't care any more if this guy hits 50 homers and 150 RBI. It's not worth it. He needs to go. He's been whining for a trade for seasons now; it's time to accommodate the little boy and send him packing.

he isn't going to the car show according to his agent because to his mom medical condition - so maybe this time there really is a Wolf

the sad part is, with all the stuff he's pulled, its gotten that way. I don't think i'd be too upset losing him.

depends on the return - you get a young stud reliever and a good 1st baseman with power you can have him

I hate to say it but I would straight up trade him for ARod today - I know it's the yankees but ARod shows up everyday and tries

When did he agree to do this car show? It certainly wasn't this week. That would make no sense, since a.) he's supposed to be in Fort Myers, and b.) his mom is sick.

By process of elimination, he obviously agreed to do this car show a long time ago. Ergo, he made a conscious decision to do a promotional appearance for cash and said, "Screw spring training, I'll come up with some excuse to go there late."

He's a childish selfish ass. Case closed. People may like him because they think he's a brainless goofball, but I think he knows EXACTLY what he's doing.

if he attends then we can be upset

could he have agreed to fly up after practice and back that night for an appearance? a reach yes but possible and I am sure done by more than a couple players during spring training

I am not efending him but am thinking that maybe it came back to bite him in the ass and his mom raelly is/was sick

Regardless if he was going or not going to the car show Manny knew that on that same day he had to be in ST.

Manny does not have to be in ST contractually until next Tuesday and that's per the Collective Bargaining Agreement that the Player's Union and the ownership groups of the teams in MLB agreed to.

Manny has not shown up to this car show and to be honest, we don't even know if he really knew about it. This is not uncommon in sports today. At the NBA All-Star weekend in Las Vegas this weekend Vince Carter was (supposedly) hosting a party at Paris. Not only was he not hosting it, he'd never even heard of the casino.

It's so easy to fall into the media trap of hating this guy and people keep saying, "I don't care if he hits 40 HR's and 140 RBI's". Yes you do. You cheer for everyone of them and when he's gone, you'll miss it-greatly. Enjoy it while it lasts as you'll be hard-pressed to find more than a handful of better hitter's in today's game.

You'll also be hard-pressed to find more than a handful of bigger selfish childish morons in today's game. This is just the latest of a long laundry-list of things he's done. There comes a point where "reward" does not equal "risk", and IMO he's reached that point a while ago.

if the Reward does not equal risk - who replaces him in the lineup filling the void in the left handed dominated line-up

Oh, I disagree whole-heartedly, I think in today's sporting world, the role-model athlete is a rarity. There are plenty of professional athletes that fit your descriptions.

As far as reward vs. risk--what risk? I don't see how Manny Ramirez showing up to ST late puts us at risk at all. He's respected and revered by his teammates and peers for his work ethic. Why not just let them police their own instead of buying into Dan Shaugnessy's new angle (since the "Curse" can no longer be used)?

Honest question, would you take .50 cents on the dollar for him right now?

That's the question they should've answered this past winter. I wonder how hard they've really tried to trade him... Not hard enough, IMO.

10/5 player - he needs to be included in the decision for he can veto the trade - I assume the effort was made but with a limited list of suitor Manny would have agreed to move to the team had its hands tied

Well if you're dead-set on moving him, again I ask the question would you take .50 cents on the $1 for him? Who would you replace him with? That's not a problem with an easy solution. IMHO he's in the top 3 right-handed hitter's in the league with Pujols and A-Rod. I don't want A-Rod and we're not getting Pujols so if you replace him, you're not getting anywhere near the same production out of the 4-spot.

There's a difference between not trying hard to trade someone and not getting anything reasonable in return. I'm sorry but no matter how selfish or childish, I do not trade a Hall of Fame lock and one of the greatest hitter's in the game for less than he's worth.

and so it starts . . .

I think this is the first "trade Manny" discussion in the history of SoxPlanet. :(

I'll never understand the thinking behind wanting to trade a 1st ballot Hall of Fame hitter. Manny's already putting up the numbers, so even if you get a player of that caliber in return, what do you really gain?

Taking 50 cents on the dollar to just get rid of him makes no sense to me. I'm not going to feel better about all the "good guys" and "team players" on the Red Sox if they're losing games because they can't score enough runs.

I never said anything about 50 cents on the dollar, although I know that's what they'd probably have to do to unload him... which is also the reason they haven't gotten rid of him (back to that whole "no NFL-style salary cap, guaranteed contract" thing).

I do like the guy, and it's not like I think he should be dumped for a bag of Fritos. His antics just annoy me sometimes, especially this early in the year.

I guess he has to be looked at like that really hot Goth chick you dated in high school who was freaky, annoying, off-putting, insulting, and poison with your friends... but you dated her 'cause she could suck a golf ball through a garden hose. :D

sounds a lot like TO. Yes the guy is good, but with that talent comes everything else. Basically stuck between a rock and a hard place. I personally wouldnt cry over getting rid of him but you cant just "give" him away. Not with all the benefits he adds to the lineup.
