Paraphrasing here but this is some of what numbnutz said last night:
Dave Duncan (pitching coach in St. Louis) is going to help Smoltz get back to being the pitcher he was in Atlanta
NOTE: Batters were hitting .384 against Smolts in his Red Sox starts.
Boston just wasnt a good fit for Smoltz
NOTE: MLB isnt a good fit for a 42 year old Smoltz
He'll be out of the AL East and away from DH's and back in the NL
NOTE: Batters were hitting .384 against Smolts in his Red Sox starts.
NOTE: John Kruk is a fvcking moran

Haha funny you bring this up, I got mad and changed the channel when he was talkin bout this yesterday. He also said that he will be helped by the fact that he is going to be a 5th starter in St. Louis and not the 3rd like he was here in Boston ... because that's definitely what he was here. Rediculous points to back a rediculous notion.

It wouldn't surprise me if Smoltz does good for St Louis especially if he's moved to the BP. I thought his stuff looked pretty decent, he just had bad control. Maybe he was trying to hard I dunno

Wouldn't surprise me either, anyone who pitched in the AL East is gunna look like Cy Young going into that division.

The NL Central has made Julio Lugo look like a competant fielder, and a really really good hitter. John Smoltz will likely throw 4 consecutive no hitters for the Cards.

I thought stats from one league don't transfer to the other? If so, then Smoltz has a league-leading 0.00 ERA.

Theo released a guy with an 8+ ERA. The Cards signed a guy with a 0.00 ERA. I see it as two separate good GM moves. :)

Smoltz 1st inning: 18 pitches 1 hit, 1 so, 0 bb
Would have been more like 13 or 14 pitches if the SS hadnt botched the first DP ball.
The one hit was a weak GB infield single. Induced Adrian Gonzales to hit into a DP (this one the SS didnt Jugo)
All in all a pretty solid first inning.

Smoltz first at bat: saw 9 pitches, fouls off three 3-2 pitches before grounding weakly to third, who took the force at second and Smoltz beat it out at first.

Smoltz scores from second on basehit.
Its just criminal that the Sox didnt use him as a hitter/runner more often.

Seven consecutive strikeouts for Smoltz.
Anyone know the record for consecutive batters faced ending in strikeout?
EDIT: 10, by Tom Seaver, 4-22-1970. Nolan Ryan has struck out 8 in a row twice.

It ends at 7.
Wow, if this doesn't prove that the National League is like a farm system for the American League, I don't know what does.

The St Louis Ex RedSox are going to win the pennant on the strength of Joohn Smoltz and Julio Lugo.

And Joel Piniero, who for some reason has been one of the best pitchers in the game lately. Despite his bullpen woes with us, it really surprised me when we DFAd him. I was always big on him and would have liked to have given him a little more time.

Which he still has. ESPN Sportscenter says Smoltz game up no runs in five innings vs. the Padres today.

Actually, a pox on me for not reading the first two pages of this thread, where Smoltz' exploits vs. the pAAAdres is documented in detail.

Maybe they figured with all the interleague play that happens nowadays there's no point to keep doing that. I'm fairly sure that resetting the stats was the norm at one point, I don't know how long ago though.

You'll still see it separated depending where you look at the stats, but it still gets combined for their yearly overall total. I don't think that has ever changed. Could be wrong though

Smoltz 2nd start with the Cards was not quite as stellar. He surrendered four runs in six innings Thursday in a loss to the Brewers. He held the lead through 5 innings, but the Brewers scored 3 in the 6th. Oh, and it seems Julio Lugo bobbled a ball which potentially could have induced a double play getting Smoltz out of a jam in the 6th.
