as I see it Tito is going to play Varitek 3 out of 5 games at Catcher so that means Victor is going to play 3 out of 5 at 1st base moving Youk to 3rd.

Now add in the slick fielding Kotchman in and you can make a case for Youk at 3rd full time


so that leaves Lowell and Papi for the DH


so who should the designated Hitter on this team?

If his hip isn't gammy, I think Lowell is a much better 3rd baseman than Youk and Youk is obviously a better 1st baseman than Vmart, let Vmart DH. If his hip is bothering him, then let him DH. Let Papi spell them on Tek's off days and let Kotchman play 1st to give Youk a day off or as a defensive late game replacement.

Mike Lowell's raised his OBP considerably over the past month (up to .341).Papi's is .306. In 349 plate appearances, Lowell has 57 RBI. In 434, Papi has 62.

The only thing working against Lowell is the L/R game the Sox are adamant against playing. But I give the advantage to the righties when facing a RHP vs. a lefty facing a LHP. I'd give Lowell the nod for a stretch.

BTW, I don't have a problem with Mike Lowell not playing every game in order to accomodate getting Youkilis and Martinez AB's. But I definitely have a problem with him sitting on a regular basis while Ortiz does not. Makes little sense.

Only players that should be sitting are Tek or Ortiz. With Lowell at DH when Ortiz is sitting. Lowell has been a hitting machine since coming back. Him, Youk, and Vmart should be in the lineup every day.

Of course if Lowell's hip is still recovering give him more days off than normal, but that should be the only reason to sit him
