Not an ideal pick up, but defnately better than all present options.

This is a good "post trade deadline" pickup (if it goes through). He's not an OBP guy at all. Doesn't get many extra-base hits and hardly ever walks. But he's better than almost anything the Sox have had at the bottom of the order all year and oh yeah, he won't kill you in the field.

I approve.

I love it from a defensive aspect.

Re: Guzman's Defense

On one hand, of the 30 other shortstops in MLB with 200 chances or more, 25 have a better fielding percentage than, one is tied with, and four have a worse fielding percentage than Cristian Guzman.

On the other hand, one of those four is Nick Green.

Re: Guzman's Offense

On one hand: A .317 batting average and a .337 on-base percentage is pushing the limits of mathematical possibility.

On the other hand: If Magadan et al can somehow convince Guzman to take a pitch now and then, he could be more than serviceable. He's supposed to have some speed, I guess, but with only 2 steals, I wouldn't bat him first. Maybe eighth or ninth?

Conclusion

Meh. Maybe the 'Guzman to start, Woodward as a defensive replacement' thing might work.

The ironic thing is that Guzman is probably only a marginal overall upgrade over Julio Lugo.

I like it. He's a pretty free swinger, but other than that he's OK.
