I guess this is a good sign. I'd be worried if he said he wanted to put up worse numbers.

Isn't Crisp still hampered by his injury?

With Lugo in leadoff, and Crisp still not right, they were talking on WEEI how Willy Mo will probably start in center until Crisp is healthy enough to get back out there (at which point he'll probably still bat in the bottom third of the order).

Sox are thin in areas, but luckily this is one area they can cope without Crisp if necessary...

According to Francona, he's still feeling lingering effects from his broken finger.

He was horrible in the very first game he played in right field, when everything went wrong for him an a few plays. I think he even knocked a ball over the bullpen fence for a homer. But over the season, I thought he played ok in the field - especially filling in for Crisp in center when Crisp was hurt.

That makes me feel better. I missed a lot of the season last year... was a horrible year for me so basically all i could catch was box scores. Thanks

wily mo was a better CF than RF - the nooks and cranny's messed with his mind

Oh god no, please no Wily Mo in the OF. He's abominable. I like the guy but he's no OF'r. He has terrible range and makes many fly balls a challenge for him. Just because a guy catches everything in his extreme near vicinity, doesn't mean he's good or even average. I think with Drew in right and Crisp in center, so long as they remain healthy, our OF defense will be solid. Manny plays the wall pretty well and is a liability on the road but he's not much better than Pena and we can't have two guys who are below-average in the OF.

Pena played 1B in the Dominican league last off-season. I'm curious as to why he was never given time there with Boston. It would seem like a much better fit.

If Crisp is unable to go, i predict that David Murphy or Jacob Ellsbury will be the Opening Day starting CF'er, not Pena.

Wily Mo is not "abominable." Anyway, the talk about Wily Mo in center is just as a fill-in if Crisp is hurt. He can't be an every day centerfielder.

I'd like to see his bat in the lineup a little more and agree that 1st base would be the best option. I'm still not sold on Youkilis as an every day player either. I'd rather see Pena in the lineup splitting time at first.

not me, with Lugo and the rook in the infield we need a better defensive 1st baseman this season to take away a few errors from that duo

I wouldnt mind giving Pena at bats at first, as long as its Mike Lowell losing at bats, not Youkilis. That dude is an on base machine. Mike Lowell is a getting old machine :) The games i got to see last year, which was probably 15 or so, i thought Youks looked good at first, maybe even very good. I think he has always been solid at third. He isnt ever going to be a 35 homer guy, but in this line up he doesnt need to be.

He's abominable-particulalry citing definitions 2 and 3. As for an injury replacement, maybe. The real problem is, Theo made a trade for a guy who he thinks can be a great hitter in this league but has no place to put him. I think it was a terrible trade, not because of Arroyo's value but because of the fact that we already have 2 DH's on this team with Ortiz and Manny and it's been a challenge for the team to get him AB's.

A couple of years ago, I went to the Reds/Red Sox game where Wily Mo (playing for the Reds at the time) dropped a Manny fly ball into the stands for a HR. It was funny because Manny was just trotting up the first base line waiting for the out call. Then he stopped dead and the ump signaled HR. Then he started jumping up and down like a little kid. The right field bleacher kept jeering Wily Mo the rest of the night.

That's why I was a little shocked when we traded Bronson for Mo. I'm not sold on the whole "Wily Mo as Manny's replacement" thing. The guy still strikes out a ton and can only play an average-at-best CF. Games aren't won in batting practice.

I was at that game! I'm not sure if I should be this excited but whatever. It was my first and only time on the Monster. I had standing room only though.

I think Pena had 2 or 3 errors in that game and went 0-4 with 3 K's if I remember correctly. That being said, it's not the norm (even though that's now 2 HR's he's helped on in Fenway). He's a streaky hitter and seems undisciplined which is understandable considering he's had minimal AB's at the minor-league level and has never really received consistent AB's at the major league level.
