View Full Version : Paps a Yankee?

This guy just needs to learn to shut the hell up. He has 2 1/2 years to go.
In an appearance on Sirius XM Radio, Jonathan Papelbon told Jody McDonald (http://stations.espn.go.com/stations/1050espnradio/show?showId=jodymac) and Bert Blyleven that he would consider playing for the Yankees once his Boston career is over:
"Oh, of course. I mean, I think if we can't come to an agreement on terms here in a Red Sox uniform, I mean I think that's pretty much the writing on the wall."
Papelbon says he'd consider joining other teams, too:
"Not only the Bronx, but anywhere. I think anywhere is a possibility. You always have to keep that in the back of your mind because you can't just be one-sided and think that, "Oh, I'm going to be in a Red Sox uniform my entire career" because nowadays that is very, very rare and hopefully we can because there's no question I would love to stay in a Boston Red Sox uniform but I have to do what's best for me and play in an atmosphere where I'm wanted."
In response to the quote, Mike Petraglia of WEEI.com (http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2009/06/18/papelbon-of-course-i-want-to-stay-in-boston/) points out that Papelbon remains under team control through 2011.

I wonder if he gets traded next off-season when Bard is ready to take over the role.
I think he is an embarrassment to the current front office/ownership with his crazy ways and public persona

I think they would rather trade him to the NL if they didn't think they could sign him before they would see him sign with the MFY's....I hope.

Know what? There are 32 closer jobs available in MLB. You can't pull a Johnny Damon and say you'd never play for the likeliest of high-bidders.
That being said, he's still out of line and I believe the Sox are crossing their fingers in hopes Bard proves worthy giving them free reign to trade Paps for some good returns.

the idiot should have simply answered with "we will cross that bridge when we get there, I am thinking about winning this season, today actually"

I mean, I may have not believed it at ESPN, but now, I am Ready for Pap to leave and i think Bard will Step up and be a premiere closer...

There does seem to be a lot of I's and me's out his mouth lately. Personally I don't even care as long as he produces. He's obviously not the sharpest tool in the shed because he didn't say the right thing, but he just means he could end up anywhere. Big friggin' deal. He gives 100% every time he's out there. This is no reason to start turning on the guy and counting the days until he's gone.

Well, it seems that Papelbon has changed his mind (http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2009/06/papelbon_strong.html).
In any case, I think most of what he said on Sirius/XM is some blend of uncensored thinking out loud and early posturing in a contract negotiation.

Yes he did a nice job of back tracking. But I think the idiot will be gone after 2011.
1. Because he will demand an outrageous salary.
2. Because the Sox will have developed in house alternatives and will take the draft pick and tell him to "screw".

Tangent: I'm not sure anyone west of the Mississippi knows that "screw" is slang for "take a hike." I had my dogs trained to recognize the command "screw" and leave the room (usually the kitchen). When I gave that command to my dogs in front of a house guest in California, she was shocked. She asked "are you telling your dogs to go hump each other?"

It's funny, we bitch when we feel that a personality does not answer a question completely and honestly. Now we bitch when one of our personalities does answer a question honestly and completely. Did folks miss where he said that he would prefer to stay in Boston? He is just saying that he will follow the money as would any of us in our daily jobs. We killed Damon when he said that he would not sign with the Yankees and then he did. At least Papelbon is being honest. I have no problem with his statement.

If Papelbon had let his original statement stand, or had 'clarified' it by following up with a "I'd of course rather stay in Boston, but if they don't want to pay me what I'm worth, well ... this is a business," then I'd have no problem with it, either.
However, the back-tracking just makes him look like a guy who shot his mouth off and was subsequently "corrected" by his agent.
What have I learned? Jonathan Papelbon is a pitcher, not a politician.

The problem I have with the statement is it's stupidity. Papelbon will be a Red Sox through the 2011 season. That is 2 1/2 years. Pretty stupid to mention at this point that you may consider signing a contract with the hated rival. Don't you think? At least wait until you are going to become a free agent...no?
My only problem with it is that it's ridiculously premature. That's all.

Was he supposed to not answer the question honestly because of how long his contract is? Your logic here seems fuzzy to me...
SamBam39

Why is it fuzzy? Think about it for a second. You know you will be a member of the Sox until 2011. Why even discuss where you will play next? What good will it do you? And to say you would consider playing for the Yankees when you have 2 and 1/2 years to go on your Sox contract? You think that shows any common sense? Why would Paps put himself through the aggravation? He could have politely dodged the question as being premature. That would seem logical.
But I know why he answered it. Because despite the fact that Paps is a pretty darned good pitcher...he is a complete moron.
So I don't begrudge him becoming a free agent and going where he wants. I just think he is stupid to start speculating where he is going to go now. Can he at least wait until he is an actual free agent?

Well one thing to consider is that papelbon isnt really under contract with the Sox until 2011. He is under team control, which means he cant sign with another team, but his contract only covers the current season. He'll sign another one this upcoming offseason, but who knows how much that one will be worth. So perhaps the "Sure i'd play for the Yankees" quote is just media grandstanding to put public pressure on the Sox to pony up the big bucks.
Also, Johnny Damon gets crucified for having said he would never play for the Yankees, then signing with them. So what is a player to do? Be truthful and say sure he would play for them like Papelbon? Or lie like Damon? They really are in a no win situation.

He may sign a series of 1 year deals until he leaves, but for all intents and purposes he is a Red Sox. Unless Daniel Bard lights the world on fire and the Sox think they can make a great deal he will be here.My only point is it is premature to say.
I don't understand why people are not understanding the point. Saying you may play for the Yankees when you become a free agent gets you nothing. He will be offered a deal or will go to arbitration. The contract will be decided on his performance and comparative salaries for relievers in the league. IT WILL NOT BE DECIDED BECAUSE DUMBASS PAPELBON SAID HE MIGHT CONSIDER PLAYING FOR THE MFY'S WHEN HE BECOMES A FREE AGENT. That won't add dime one to his contract at this stage and imo becomes a waste of words. But it will rile up the fan base and could make his life miserable as his last contract winds down.
Jonathan Papelbon can pitch anywhere he wants, except for right now. He pitches for the Red Sox or doesn't and hopes they trade him. Those are his options. Talking about playing for the Yankees possibly in 2 1/2 yrs. is well within his rights. Just dumb, imo. And anyway he backtracked off his own statements so I guess even Papelbon the idiot realized it was dumb, or his handlers did.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. Personally i would rather him say "Yup...i'd play for the Yankees, if the price is right" than to do what Damon did. Given the choice between honesty and false loyalty, i'll take honesty every time.

an honest response could be as simple as
"we will see what happens at that time but as of today I am a Red Sox"
do not deny or agree to the Yankees but leave the door open

I never said he was walking this offseason. But there will still be a contract negotiation. And having the public saying "OMG we cant let him go to the Yankees...we better sign him to a long term contract NOW!!!" (kind of like a lot of people are doing with Jason Bay right now) would be a positive thing for that negotiation from his standpoint.
