Right now I would do nothing and hope that he continues to progress. I believe that we still have a month to the trade deadline which is enough time to see if Big Popup has improved. Otherwise, if Penny is traded to make room for Smoltz, maybe we could get a bat at that time.

You gotta wonder if he will be sitting for the Philly series.

Tito implied this earlier this week, I would have to search for a link
I think Penny should be traded not for a SS or a DH but possibly a Back-up Catcher for next season

I'd like to thank the board greeter that handed me this on the way in:
:smilies-11117:
I wouldn't do anything about Papi. Despite what I've heard some say, his swing is NOT slower now. He's just not as confident and comfortable at the plate as he used to be, so his swings are missing the ball. He's 100% defensive at the plate. But he's becoming less and less tentative as the season goes on, which should lead to a gradual improvement to some new hitting level (above .200 ...). But nobody can say if that new hitting level will be anywhere near his old pre-injury hitting level. He looks healthy, his eyes are fine, his reflexes are fine. To me, he just looks like he needs to start putting everything together again. He's basically been recovering from being injured in one way or another for the last 2-3 years, so I still think he needs more slack to come back. This team can win without him. They already have been. They can continue to do so if they need to.
Here - let me hold the sign they gave me up again:

oops, wrong way... Let me turn it arou... HEY!!!!! WTF????

Do I take this to mean that you don't think that the Sox will pick up Jason's option for next year?no pick up Jason's option and sit the replacement this year as Wakes catch. Next year split the duties then try to keep Jason one more year at cheap money to back him up...a slow process that keeps the Captain happy

I agree with you Mikie, was just unsure where you stood regarding the Cap'n.

from the Globe
"We're trying to win games," manager Terry Francona said. "We want to put our best hitters, our best defense [on the field]. What do you do with Youk? We've got a guy that's won the Gold Glove that I would have a hard time saying, 'Well, we're not going to play our Gold Glove first baseman 'cause I wanted to take David's mind off of his struggles.' That doesn't make a lot of sense to me."
Ortiz said only, "I'm not talking anymore. Not for a while."

"We want to put our best hitters, our best defense [on the field]. "
Youk is both of these so hopefully it's a no-brainer.

I don't see any argument for fielding a competitive team that wouldn't have Youks on the field and Papi on the bench in a National League city

discuss He is fine i think people need to stop worrying so much about him. He gets the job done when we need him to get it.he not the only team mate on this team that gets things done.
There is a reason we got hitters and pitchers/fielders for a reason.

I know the numbers don`t lie. But he could easily have about 6-7 homeruns with some of the shots he`s hit. Plus his average could be a little better if not for getting robbed by the shift etc... But things being the way they are. He`s going to need to produce despite those problems. Because once the Sox settle the SS problem his situation may be next.

Do nothing, he's been hitting rather well this past week (aside from last night). I really think he's on his way to getting back on track.

The Sox will be patient as Papi is one of the biggest Sox icons EVER!!! But if he doesn't produce they WILL make a move for a hitter before the trading deadline

Encouraging little streak hes had. Let's see if he can get it going. As much as I'd like to pick up Dunn or someone like that, I'd rather not lose the prospects in such a deal unless absolutely necessary. I think he needs to start that first game of the PHI Series. He absolutely kills Blanton.

trading for Dunn would kill me when No one but the Nats wanted him this offseason for nothing

Honestly it would have to be a low level prospect for someone like Dunn. I don't see the Sox giving up Bowden or Buchholz for Dunn. And I don't see the wisdom in the Nats trading for Penny. By the time they are competitve Penny will be 400 pounds and retired some place.

I don't think Boston will go after Dunn. I think they are looking at players that fits into 1st or 3rd. I don't think that is Dunn as he has 2 errors at first in 6 games this season. And in his history of playing first he has started 103 games and has 17 errors. Which would give him about 26 errors for a full season. To put that in perspective, Ryan Howard lead the league in errors at first last year with 19.
I'm still thinking that if they pick up anyone it will be Lowell that will be DHing and Youk + new player playing 1st and 3rd.

I would agree. I think their dream trade would be for Adrian Gonzalez. But I don't see that happening.
