Simply can't be overstated, he provided innings and consistancy early in the year, protecting the bullpen and carrying the rotation until Beckett and Lester got hot, and he's still much more reliable than Penny and Dice-K. He has clearly earned his spot in the rotation until Smoltz has proven himself and Dice-K gets his shit together.

I do look forward to seeing what Smoltz has left. If he can get back to where he was before he got hurt (or close) the Sox will run away with the division. Having Beckett, Lester, Smoltz all as aces is almost unfair for everyone else. Then to be able to fill out the rotation with whoever is pitching best between Wakes, DMats, Penny, Buchholz or Bowden (with Masterson also available) is downright scary.

:eeek:

buchholz and bowden are becoming bored in the minors.

I can see a series of 15 day DL stints for some of the older guys so they can make it the season

Actually, that would be shrewd, even for every starter (unless Becks goes on a Cy Young contending roll). I've also heard speculation that once late July Roll around, they go to a 6 man rotation.

Shill Claimed if he returned last season that was going to be the case but at what cost...do you lose a BP spot or a bench/role player

and if Papi is still at the mendoza line can you afford the roster spot?

It's also nice to know you can throw him in the Bullpen and he won't get pissy about it.

He'll be 43 in August and is on pace to go 22-8 (which won't happen). It would be awesome if he can maintain this for a while just to hear the analysts throw Wake into the Cy Young discussion. Always a good time when you have a 43 year old knuckleballer on the list for the Cy Young award.

What has been the highest ERA for a Cy Young winner? I'm pretty sure 4.50 would be it.

losing a bullpen spot wouldn't be worth the price. if they DFA'd lugo and used that slot for the 6th man, i'd be fine with that. ;) no one would notice the difference.

edit:

also, don't forget wakefield gets an average of 9.47 runs per game. he could be 6-5 right now if he wasn't bailed out on two of his starts.

I may well be the biggest Wake homer there is, but he WILL NOT be involved in any Cy Young discussions.

I'm pretty sure I'd notice that the overall contributions from the SS position would suck a lot less.

Completely tongue in cheek. I just find it funny that he is on pace to win 22 games. And usually if anyone is approaching 20 games someone always say "you can't ignore (insert pitcher here) for the Cy Young".

I don't think we'll see a 6-man rotation. I can't see a fiery guy like Beckett being happy about waiting an extra day before each start. And it could throw off their rhythm

95 he was 7-1 with a 1.65 era and never got a glance for the all-star game...cy young???...cold day in hell before they give him any respect

just think of his win totals if Kerigan didn't hate him from 1999-2002

I remember one year Lamar Hoyt won it with a 3.66 ERA. That may be the highest ever.
