nice to have you here, welcome to the planet

a few request

1. DO NOT START THREADS FOR EVERY AT BAT

2. We get it ESPN board was over moderated, you need to get over it, this isn't ESPN

3. DO NOT START THREADS FOR EVERY AT BAT - they will get merged into one thread

As someone who lurked over there for a short period of time, I understand your frustrations with the ESPN boards.

One observation in terms of the difference between there and here is that ESPN is more like a sounding board that turned into a forum.

Here there is a small community of posters that disagree on a lot but all try to maintain a minimum threshold of respect and decorum. While the intent is not to try to become SoSH, the intent is DEFINITELY to to ever become the ESPN Board.

Welcome all. I know I speak for others when I say I am truly happy to see an influx of new blood that carries the same ole' passion for the Sox.

Please make yourselves at home... The hazing period shall commence shortly. Please select the Teletubby or Hooters girl costume of your choice.

Bannings around here are few - 2 people in my time here

we are not mod crazy button pressing freaks here. The place should and will moderate itself, the flow of the forum will let us know if there is an issue and then we deal with it..many times based on the feel of the board

Not to :deadhorse:, but I just realized why the ESPN crew is so opposed to game threads. In the early days of the ESPN boards, the software was really bad and posts were not threaded. Every thought was a brand new post and you could not easily respond to something that someone else said. ONce the software was updated, the old guard continued to do things the way they had always been. And as new people joined, they just followed along.

NG-I was there from the beginning of the ESPN boards (about the firstmonth they existed, i think - I believe I was "Stretch" back then, but someone stole that when the boards were reorganized by ESPN in the mid 90's and you had to re-register screen names). You're right about the early boards being unthreaded. In fact, there was only one ESPN MLB board for all teams fans in the very beginning. I do remember posts during games being all over the place - and posts for all teams being mixed, which made it very tough to follow any single thought trails. I should note, however, that over half the "board regs" from that all-team board were actually Red Sox fans. It all seemed "natural" though back then. Kind of like a bunch of people at a party talking about lots of different things in the same room, but with someobne writing it all down... I gues that's not really all that different in essence from current sports boards. Just a little more organized.

I don't like game threads only because I think that during your team's games, your focus should primarily be on that game, not on the pro's and con's of eating tuna sandwiches or hot dogs for lunch. Haivng a game thread puts the game off in a corner of the board - in one single thread (granted, it's often a MASSIVE thread). That leaves the rest of the board to discuss the hot dog/tuna sandwich dilemma. I just believe most of the board should be talking about the ongoing game events in a game that's being played. There are MANY subplots to individual games that get lost in a game thread.

You brought up a good point previously with the idea that some (many?)ESPN posters dislike game threads because of post deletion there. That does play a role I'm sure. But that deletion is a (reasonably) recent phenomenon at ESPN. Last couple of years only.

My own views anyway. I'll admit that I have nothing against a game thread. I just prefer using the entire board as a giant "game thread" to more fully converse. This allows development of sub-plots about the game and lets independent thoughts get fleshed out. But maybe that's just me. And yes, I do realize the "one post threads" get ridiculous at times during a game.

I understand what you say but I can now think of a game in 08 and go the the game thread to see the mood of the board on game day

like Sox vs Yankees on april 17, 2008 Mussina knocked out early, beckett on the mound, a late rally by the Yankees that was stopped and Pookie calling out Arod for Roids long before the chick did

http://www.soxplanet.com/forums/showpost.php?p=49128&postcount=123

this way all thoughts are in one thread so it will be a continuous flow to show the ups and downs of the fans reactions..if a new thread for each thought is posted most get ignored and we will not be able to see how the board felt on that day because the post get lost in the shuffle

I have to respectfully disagree with you. First, baseball is THE perfect sport for a game thread. (I think only golf would be better, but who wants to talk about that?). Most other sports move too quickly to maintain any real time conversation about the events unfolding in front of you. But baseball is paced perfectly. And a game thread allows a group of people to write their thoughts about what is happening in the game. Exciting games you usually only get pure ball talk. Boring games can veer off into many different directions (depending on what mood sc is in that night ;) ). Losses can just become a bash session on whoever is deemed the goat that night.

Personally, I love the game thread. It really is like a large group of fans all talking about the same thing, in the same place. And yes there may be a few different thoughts going on all at once. But you get to choose which point you want to respond to and go with it.

Plus, game threads are a pretty solid tradition on just about every baseball board I have ever visited. Some can be huge (60-80 pages) or more intimate (like ours). I love the game threads and hope it is a tradition we keep going here. Including the rules that some people seemed to laugh at.

Speaking of which I gotta go start the game thread for tonight! :)

Positive, negative funny. The whole point of the game thread is the ebb and flow as the game changes.

And if it's my stupid comments you are talking about then I apologize. But, know this, it is not serious. I am the biggest fan there is. But, during the game I can get a little out of control. I have been trying to calm down. I think I have gotten better but it sometimes things get crazy.

So please feel free to comment on anything you want. You can even tell me to shut up. :closemouth:
