They exist solely to deprive citizens of a majority of their freedom. What I don't understand is why more people fail to understand this. Political partisanship should be the realm of politicians, rather than normal people.

I agree with you in theory: the only problem is, when there are too many political parties, it takes governments far too long to get anything done. By the time policies have been implemented, they've been compromised to the point of barely resembling the initial items as they were tabled.

That depends on whether or not you believe the two parties are working toward a different end result. I don't. Based on what I've seen and read over the years, I have every reason to believe that 99.9% of politicians are nothing more than corporate stooges who are working to preserve the interests of defense contractors, religious organizations, oil and food companies and hundreds of other special interest groups.

Agreed about politicians...but that's no different from anywhere in the world. I certainly don't like the two-party system, but it does have some advantages. Try France or Greece if you want to see the potential for inefficient bureaucracy brought about by the multi-party system.

EDIT: And some parties, for instance the Communist or Socialist parties in some European countries, absolutely have different aims. Whether or not politicians see the "big picture" differently is up for debate. But while the major goals may not change, I'm sure the path taken to achieve those goals looks different depending on the backing party and how many changes were required in order to get it ratified by all other represented parties.
