What is everyone’s thought about getting him?

I keep going back and forth....

Will the Rockies pick up some of the money on the contract? Lowell & Tavaras? Yeah that is great, they are just throw ins, but who are the other players? That is the Key.. Hansen? Delcarmen? Elisbury? Buchholz? Bard? Bowden? Cox?

Helton is owed about 91 Million over the next 5 years. That is a ton of money for someone that will turn 34 in the upcoming season? His numbers are declining over the last 5 years. Last year he had a stomach ailment that is now cured so that was sort of a throw away year. All that being said, he is an upgrade both defensively and offensively at first base. His OPS and OBP make Theo's knees weak.

I would do the deal if you only hade to give up one of the prospects that I listed above and the Rockies picked up at least 3 Million a year on the contract. If you have to give up a couple, then I just don't think the price is right. His best years are behind him.

I will probably change my tune in a couple of minutes or so but I just want to see how everybody else feels.

I like the deal IF...

1. no young arms go and if so Delcarmen - Bard can't go has not been the proper time period since the draft

2. Rockies take Lowell and his money and offset the cost about $40 mill

what I don't like is losing your starting infield from last season's opening day (youk going to 3rd), the drop defensively on the left side of your infield and giving up a young arm (delcarmen)

I would take less money back if we lose no young pitcher

I would do the trade but I wouldn't like to see the Red Sox give up some of the young pitchers they have (maybe just one).

And the Rockies should pay some of Helton's salary.

reports are Colorado says it is not a salary dump but want it to be Helton for Tavares, Lowell and BOTH Manny Delcarmen and Craig Hanson. Too much for this fan to part with especially with Cron's (sp?) Disease and the Bad back

too quick to dump Hanson and actually Delcarmen but he I would part with Manny Delcarmen if forced too

hell it was cheaper to get Andrew Jones last season according to reports

That is crazy. There is no way the Red Sox should give up Hansen and Delcarmen. That is too much.

I don't like this deal at all. Helton has 6 years left on this deal and he is already 33 years old. He only hit 15 HR and 81 RBI last year in 145 games, half of which were in HR friendly Colorado! To give up a pitching prospect and a good 3B who essentially had the same production last year is just assinine. To part with Hanson and/or Delcarmen is just plain dumb.

I don't think the Sox will make this deal.

I think a heavily subsidized Helton for Taverez and Lowell and a prospect whose last name is not Delcarmen or Hansen would be the only acceptable trade. Ive seen the number 40 million floating around as to the amount Colorado would kick in. Five years at 10 million per really isnt that much for a guy of Heltons stature. The upcoming crops of free agent first and third basemen in 2007 are not pretty. If the Sox are going to have to make a trade for a corner infielder after this season anyway(with no internal solution to play 3B/1B opposite K Youkilis) or resign Lowell, then i think they have to at least give Helton some consideration. He might not be the Todd Helton of a few years ago, but he could be the best realistically attainable option over the next couple of offseasons(unless anyone here thinks we can pry M Cabrera away from the Marlins :)) And maybe a change of scenery and a realistic shot at the post season will revitalize Helton (not to mention hitting behind Manny, DO and Drew.)

I looked at his hit charts here (http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/individual_player_hitting_chart.jsp?c_id=mlb&playerID=115732&statType=1) and it seems like he is very capable hitting the ball the other way. So maybe he adapts quickly to Fenway and becomes sort of a Wade Boggs Jr. I know....unbridled optimism. I feel so dirty :)

he will be a doubles machine and will hit second in the order

Lugo R
Helton L
Ortiz L
Manny R
Drew L
Varitek S
Youk R
Crisp S
Pedrioa R

He has hit 50 doubles but his power is gone, he will slap the ball off the wall and sit on 2nd waiting to be driven in

what is needed is a return of Tek to the order - hopefully his injury is behind him (yeah bad joke about his ass injury) -

I like your optimism, but:

Personally, I wasn't a big fan of this trade anyways.

Well whatever. The Rockies were asking for way too much.
