CBS4) WESTON Former Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson is facing assault and battery charges following an alleged domestic dispute with his wife.

Johnson was arrested Sunday night at his home on Beaver Road in Weston. 40-year-old Jackie Johnson claims she was assaulted during an argument with her husband.

Upon further investigation, Weston Police also arrested Jackie Johnson and charged her with assault and battery.

Both pleaded not guilty to the charges during their arraignment in Waltham District Court on Tuesday. They are due back in court on September 7th.

The Johnsons have four children.

The 33-year-old Johnson retired from the Patriots in 2005 due to repeated concussions. He was drafted by the Patriots in 1995 out of Colorado and played ten season for the Patriots. The 6-foot-4-inch, 253-pound linebacker made 865 tackles and 11.5 sacks during his career.

Last season, Johnson worked as a football analyst for CBS4. Two months ago, he informed the station that he has decided to pursue other opportunities this coming season.

Bad stuff. There's never a good excuse for a man--especially a football player, or an ex-football player--to be smacking around his wife.

Maybe Ted should get a bunk in the cell with that a-hole Phillies pitcher...

The thing that struck me is that before he was married, Johnson was known for being a big fan of romance novels. You know, the kind with ripped bodices and titles like "Captive Passion".

He was actually engaged to Danielle Steel's daughter after meeting the Queen of the romance genre at a book signing and getting introduced, but broke it off for some reason before he tied the knot.

So, that tells you that Teddy wasn't exactly the typical knuckledragging linebacker, something that has been confirmed by a lot of his teammates. Ted was supposed to be a really nice, thoughtful and laid-back guy. I've heard that a hundred times if I've heard it once.

So, what is it that drove him to what he is accused of? Possible brain injury? Frustration with a premature end to his career? Is he a complete phony or is his wife perhaps a soul-sucking shrew that drove him to the brink?

This is going to be interesting in a voyueristic sense, but I feel sad to see him, in particular, involved in something this ugly.
