White Sox decline options on Griffey, Hall

As expected, the team declined a $16 million option held on Ken Griffey Jr. for the 2009 season. Griffey receives a $4 million buyout, split between the White Sox and the Reds.

But declining the $2.25 million club option on Toby Hall leaves the White Sox temporarily in search of a backup catcher. A.J. Pierzynski and Minor Leaguer Cole Armstrong stand as the only two backstops on the White Sox 40-man roster.

Hall might be a decent platoon partner for Varitek....Vtek hit .284/.378/.484 vs LHP last season and Hall hit .377 /.411/.509 vs RHP.

The Royals team record for HRs in a season is 36 by Steve Balboni in 1986. That franchise is so bad they couldnt even get steroids right.

The Royals now have Ross Gload, Billy Butler, Ryan Shealy, Kila Ka'aihue, and Mike Jacobs competing for the 1B job.

Rangers will shop catching to find pitching at the winter meetings. Don't know if the Sox will be willing to trade pitching for a catcher. But we all know they will at least have a conversation.

General manager Jon Daniels, who has already been working the phones through October, will be trying to satisfy the club's quest for starting pitching, and is talking to clubs who are looking for a catcher. He should find much to talk about with his colleagues. Catching is the Rangers' top trade chip, and various clubs have expressed an interest in Gerald Laird, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Taylor Teagarden and Max Ramirez over the past year. The Rangers seem in a position where they have to move at least one, but the question is if they can get starting pitching in return.

Jason LaRue's time on the open market lasted barely 24 hours.
A day after filing for free agency, LaRue re-signed with St. Louis. The catcher inked a one-year deal to return as the backup catcher for Yadier Molina. The move continued a pattern for the Cardinals, who usually act quickly to sign or re-sign their second catcher. According to The Associated Press, LaRue will receive $950,000.

I would think he would go where he can start. I think on the Sox he would be a 4th outfielder if the Sox move a CF. But Sox do have Nancy Drew, so a lot of playing time may not be a problem.:icon_hang

Teams looking for a starter may be wary of giving him starter money until he proves he can handle the load of playing everyday, if he even can. Every time they talked about him in the playoffs it seemed they were maiking a point to point out how the Rays had to balance his playing time against how tired he was.

A team like Boston might be exactly what he needs....a 4th OFer spot with a lot of visibilty with a starter with a history of getting injured. Of course the downside for the Sox is there is no guarantee that Baldelli could handle playing everyday, even for a week or two, if someone got hurt, so the Sox might end up having to bring up a minor leaguer to share some time with Baldelli anyway.

So....who knows?

Jim Edmonds would like to play another year!
from Buster Olney

There was talk after the Cubs were knocked out of the playoffs that center fielder Jim Edmonds, a borderline Hall of Fame candidate, might have played his last game. But his agent, Paul Cohen, said Friday evening that Edmonds fully intends to play next season.

"He's definitely coming back," Cohen said. "The way he finished up, why wouldn't he?"

After being released by the Padres early in the season, Edmonds hit .256 for the Cubs, with a .369 on-base percentage, a .568 slugging percentage and 19 homers (among 38 extra-base hits) in 250 at-bats. Given those numbers and the fact that Edmonds now is 18 homers away from 400, Cohen will sit down with Edmonds in the days ahead to discuss his options.

Let the bidding begin....

CC Sabathia, the prize pitcher on this year's market, filed for free agency Saturday.

Sabathia was acquired by Milwaukee from Cleveland on July 7, then went 11-2 with seven complete games, three shutouts and a 1.65 ERA in 17 starts to help the Brewers make the playoffs for the first time since 1982. Overall, the 28-year-old left-hander was 17-10 with a 2.70 ERA for the Indians and Brewers.
Milwaukee plans to make an offer soon. Sabathia's new deal could top Johan Santana's $137.5 million, six-year contract with the New York Mets.

Yanks sign sinkerballer Mitre.

MIAMI -- Sergio Mitre, who underwent Tommy John ligament replacement surgery on July 15, is reuniting with Joe Girardi.

When Girardi managed the Marlins in 2006, Mitre was part of the pitching staff. On Monday, Mitre reached agreement on a a split contract with the Yankees, managed by Girardi.
The Major League portion of the deal is for $1.25 million, and there is a team option for 2010.
Due to the severe surgery on his right elbow, Mitre may not be ready to pitch until midseason, according to his agent, Matt Sosnick. Normal recovery time from Tommy John surgery is 12-18 months.
"About eight teams showed interest," Sosnick said. "The Yankees showed the most interest."
When healthy, Mitre has tremendous upside. He could be a key contributor for New York in the second half, working either out of the rotation or in the bullpen.
Mitre broke in with the Cubs, but he was traded to the Marlins before the 2006 season as part of the Juan Pierre deal. In 2007, the right-hander was 5-8 with a 4.65 ERA in 27 games, all starts. He threw 149 innings.
A sinkerballer, Mitre was especially effective early in 2007. In May of that year, he was 2-0 with a 1.12 ERA in 40 1/3 innings. As the season progressed, however, he dealt with fatigue, and his second-half statistics suffered. In 12 starts after the All-Star break, he was 2-4 with a 7.27 ERA. Mitre entered Spring Training with the chance to be among Florida's top three starting pitchers. However, he made just one appearance in Grapefruit League action, facing three batters without recording an out before being lifted with forearm tightness. <!--sphereit end-->

Mets interested in Javier Vazquez.

While White SoxGM Ken Williams has gone underground on responding to trade rumors, one from a well-placed source at the general managers meetings said the Mets had interest in Javier Vazquez.

The source did not know what the Mets were offering in return, but it might not be much if they would take the entire $23 million owed to the right-hander for the next two seasons. The Mets are looking for at least one starting pitcher and maybe two.

Tigers to take a look at Rafael Furcal.

The Tigers have not yet had formal discussions with the agent for Rafael Furcal, who just filed for free agency this week, but they're expected to enter the mix for the speedy shortstop. How far they delve into the bidding should be telling for Detroit's approach this offseason. Team president/general manager Dave Dombrowski has said multiple times that they should have help coming at short from the farm system in 2010, whether it's Cale Iorg (who played at Class A Lakeland last year) or Danny Worth (who made it all the way to Triple-A Toledo in his first pro season).

A.J. Burnett opted out of the last 2 years of his contract.

DANA POINT, Ca. - It's official: Blue Jays right-hander A.J. Burnett is opting out of his contract and becoming a free agent.
Burnett reached his decision after his agents met with Blue Jays officials on Tuesday afternoon.

However, the pitcher's lead agent, Darek Braunecker, said that the Blue Jays continue to express strong interest in Burnett and remain a serious player in the bidding.
The Red Sox and Yankees are expected to be among the teams that will pursue Burnett. And another AL East team, the Orioles, is likely to at least show interest. Burnett lives in Monkton, Md., outside of Baltimore.

The Braves offered Japaenese free agent pitcher Junichi Tazawa a contract today.

While Braves officials continue their pursuit of Jake Peavy, they’re also moving forward on other pitching fronts. Namely one on the other side of the Pacific Rim.

I’m told the Braves have already offered a major league contract to Junichi Tazawa, the Japanese right-hander who’s drawn serious interest from Boston, Seattle and possibly the Cubs and Marlins.

Matt Holliday is rumored to be going to the Yankees or Rays! :icon_hang

Matt Holliday, barring a dramatic reversal, will be traded this winter. General manager Dan O’Dowd made it clear Tuesday that he’s not afraid to play kids or unproven players when I asked him about starting Ian Stewart, Seth Smith and Ryan Spilborghs in the same lineup. Holliday should fetch a big return, but there’s no perfect deal out there. The Rockies want pitching which is why they have spoken with the Rays, who could part with Edwin Jackson or Andy Sonnanstine. Carl Crawford’s name has also surfaced as someone the Rays might be willing to give up for Holliday.

http://blogs.denverpost.com/rockies/2008/11/05/gm-meetings-starting-to-heat-up/

from Joel Sherman of the NY Post It is somewhat possible that the Yankees can play for Holliday if the price drops significantly. Here is a small tidbit to keep in mind: The Rockies VP of scouting, Bill Schmidt, is said to be a fan of Ian Kennedy. There is no way that Kennedy can be the center of a trade for Holliday. But the fact is that many teams no longer have that much interest in Kennedy. That the Rockies might would at least provide a piece to a trade puzzle.

He'll decline. I think he'll end up getting 3 years and $60-$70 from someone.

My dream was that he'd have to settle for 3/$45 million but that was wishfull thinking. Stupid a-hole could've essentially had Dodgers money just for staying put here. Oh well....

Tigers Rumors: Pudge, Varitek, Lugo, Thames
By Tim Dierkes [November 7 at 11:55am CST]
Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press doles out the latest Tigers rumors.

How will the Tigers resolve their catching situation? GM Dave Dombrowski calls an Ivan Rodriguez reunion a longshot, and Scott Boras is asking the moon for Jason Varitek. The Tigers may not have the goods to swing a trade for Gerald Laird. Morosi likes the idea of Henry Blanco, but says the Tigers have yet to contact his agent. Check out the other free agent options here.
Morosi considers a bad contract swap for Julio Lugo a viable option for the Tigers. He notes that Dontrelle Willis and Nate Robertson have similar commitments. Lugo for Robertson does seem reasonable for both sides.
Morosi believes the Tigers match up well with the Reds, who are looking for a power-hitting outfielder. Magglio Ordonez is the marquee name, but Morosi likes the fit with Marcus Thames.

So if Holliday does well I expect him to be moved early, maybe a June 1st trade

Beane will be without Street, who was moved to 6th/7th innning work after stuggling and Greg Smith, A lefty with one year of experience and should get more back in return IF Holliday does well early.

Looks like the Braves may get Peavy. But he has to waive his no-trade first.

The Atlanta Braves (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/teams/page/ATL), full-steam ahead in their pursuit of right-hander Jake Peavy (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/players/playerpage/288915), are offering a four-player package of players, and San Diego is expected to request that Peavy waive his no-trade clause so the deal can be completed, CBSSports.com has learned.

Under terms of the deal discussed by the Braves and Padres, San Diego would receive shortstop Yunel Escobar (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/players/playerpage/1098922), Class A outfielder Gorkys Hernandez (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/players/playerpage/1599715), one of two starting pitchers -- Charlie Morton (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/players/playerpage/1390876) or Jo-Jo Reyes (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/players/playerpage/1232096) -- and either reliever Blaine Boyer (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/players/playerpage/448910) or one of two minor-league left-handers (one of which is believed to be Jeff Locke).

Yanks are going to make their pitch to Sabathia tomorrow.

One Yankee executive said, "we have to separate ourselves." Translation: They must divest Sabathia of his dreams of the Pacific and the batter's box by going to a financial region relatively quickly that no other franchise would even consider, especially in this plummeting economy.

That means a bid north of the six years at $137.5 million the New York Mets bestowed last year on Johan Santana . My gut says six years at $150 million sounds about right to force league-wide surrender before the bidding really even gets started.

Don't know how much they could pay but he is from the area.

WASHINGTON -- It has been reported several times that the Nationals have interest in signing free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira. MLB.com has learned that the feeling is mutual, according to a person familiar with Teixeira's thinking.

Teixeira is from Maryland and is thinking about the possibility of playing in Washington. He played baseball, basketball and soccer at Mt. St. Joseph's High School in Baltimore. He set Maryland state records for career homers (29), RBIs (105) and runs (128). "[Maryland] is his home," said the source. "In some instances, I think players often tend to look at that in a different light than other franchises

Tigers may look at Trevor Hoffman if Joel Zumaya isn't ready.

Zumaya made it back this summer and pitched for about two months before soreness in the surgically repaired shoulder forced him back to the disabled list. What was hoped to be the tearing of scar tissue turned out to be a stress fracture, sidelining him for the final six weeks of the season.

Whether it sidelines Zumaya for the start of next season is a question the Tigers can't yet answer with any certainty. With that, the Tigers have to plan as if he might not be available

...for the Tigers, whose interest has ranged from closers such as Trevor Hoffman and Brandon Lyon to several left-handers -- some specialists, others middle relievers. They have an internal option with Zach Miner, though he looms larger as a starter while the Tigers wait for Kenny Rogers to decide whether he'll pitch in 2009 and Freddy Garcia to make some starts in winter ball.

John Heyman think the MFY's and Sox will battle over Derek Lowe.

There's been a lot of newspaper space (and some Web space, as well) dedicated to a potential battle between the archrival Red Sox and Yankees for free agent pitcher A.J. Burnett. But it appears much more likely that the real skirmish between these two hated rivals will be over another free-agent pitcher, Derek Lowe, who is cited by many baseball executives for becoming even more focused in his years out in Los Angeles.

Orioles being mentioned as a possible destination for Jake Peavy. But Rosenthal still likes the Cubbies.

The Padres continue to discuss a trade of Peavy to the Cubs, but obstacles remain. First, the Cubs are in the process of being sold; offers from their four remaining bidders are due by Monday. The Cubs already have re-signed free-agent right-hander Ryan Dempster for $52 million over four years. They almost certainly would need the blessing of a new owner to take on Peavy, who is owed $63 million over the next four seasons — and might ask for even more money to waive his no-trade clause.

The teams, meanwhile, are not close to a trade agreement. Padres general manager Kevin Towers is trying to involve a third club so he could get the package of players he desires. The Cubs almost certainly will need to move right-hander Jason Marquis, who is earning $9.875 million next season, to clear both payroll and a rotation spot for Peavy.

The Padres could take Marquis, with the Cubs including enough money in the deal to reduce his salary to say, $7 million. Or, they could spin Marquis and the cash from the Cubs to another club. The Rockies, Reds and Giants have shown varying degrees of interest in Marquis, according to a major-league source.
Another possibility is that the Padres could spin one or two of the prospects that they receive from the Cubs. A team might value a player such as outfielder Felix Pie more than the Padres do; the Orioles are again talking with the Cubs about Pie, according to The Baltimore Sun, and could emerge as the third team in the deal.

from Baseball Prospectus

A.J. Burnett is looking at the Blue Jays, Red Sox, Yankees, Braves, Orioles, and Phillies I still hope they sign D. Lowe if they sign a pitcher.

The Angels may be willing to match the Yankees $140MM offer to CC Sabathia. They won't offer 10 years to Mark Teixeira. If they can't land Teixeira, they will consider Pat Burrell for first base.

Yankees meet with Teixeira. Maybe a fall back plan if Sabathia signs elsewhere?

The New York Times reported Friday morning on its web site that New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman met with Mark Teixeira in Washington. Agent Scott Boras was present. Tyler Kepner sums up the Yankees' current free agent stance: "The Yankees' priority is pitching, and Cashman met with Teixeira at the request of the agent Scott Boras, who also represents starters Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez and outfielder Manny Ramirez. Boras was present at the meeting with Teixeira, who was visiting family in Maryland. The Yankees would love to add Teixeira, a switch-hitter with power who has won two Gold Gloves. But it is unlikely they could sign both Teixeira and Sabathia, to whom they offered a six-year, $140 million deal on Nov. 14." ...

LAS VEGAS - A few things heard while walking through the Bellagio Hotel early this morning at the Baseball Winter Meetings:

1. The Red Sox are one of a few teams mentiond by agent Tom O'Connell as interested parties for free-agent right-hander Carl Pavano, a former Red Sox farmhand. Florida seems to be the favorite. The Yankees are also in it....

2. Milton Bradley is in intense discussions with the Cubs.

3. The Tigers are eyeing Kerry Wood on a two-year deal.

4. The Mets were closing in on a three-year deal for closer Frankie Rodriguez.

5. The Dodgers are about to sign former Red Sox second baseman Mark Loretta and third baseman Casey Blake.

6. The Dodgers did at one time have interest in Jason Varitek.

7. The Brewers may not bring Gabe Kapler back because they need a left-handed hitter,

8. Talks were again heating up between the Padres and Cubs on Jake Peavy.

9. Saw Mike Pagliarulo, Ellis Burks, Lou Merloni, Mike Easler and Brian Daubach.

10, One Phillies official denies the presence of a three-year deal for Derek Lowe, while another major league source says Lowe likes the Phillies as a possible destination.

11. The Red Sox also have interest in free-agent righty Brad Penny.

12. Agent Alan Hendricks said the Dodgers interest in Andy Pettitte is real because of Joe Torre, Pettitte's former manager in New York. Says client Rogers Clemens is trying to keep a low profile.

13. If the Cubs obtain Jake Peavy, Jason Marquis or Rich Harden become trade bait.

14. Jim Leyland has grown a winter beard.

15. Rafael Furcal is talking to Toronto.

I think a lot of it had to do with that young kid who was setting up for KRod..err....*goes to look up his name*...Jose Arredondo....he had a WHIP of 1.049 in 61 IP last season, and is only 24. Now KRod is obviously over valued right now because of his record last season. The Angels were said to be grooming Arredondo to be the closer eventually. Unless the kid just absolutely implodes, they should have a very good closer at a fraction of the cost of KRod.

The couple of times i saw him pitch Arredondo looked NASTY.

Arredondo throws a 94-96 mph fastball that has left-to-right action late in the zone. He has a splitter that sits at 84-86 mph, and a slider that’s 86-89 mph. His splitter is ridiculous. It kind of reminds me of Kelvim Escobar’s out pitch. I don’t see how anyone hits it. It’s got short action, dropping 6-8 inches when it hits the strike zone. It’s not like Harden’s splitter, dropping from the time it leaves his hand. With the 10 mph differential in velocity between his fastball and splitter/slider, he should be an elite late-inning reliever. And his slider looks like a splitter. It’s more of a slurve. But it’s so good that his K/9 will/should–barring injury–always be 9+.
Arredondo doesn’t really have a solid minor-league pedigreee, but he’s eerily similar to (Francisco) Rodriguez: a huge year at A+, a great 1/4 season at AA, and a great 1/4 season at AAA. And then he’s too good to keep in the minors. He also reminds me of Tony Pena. Maybe that’s the better comparison; but, physically, Arredondo is Rodriguez. He looks like Rodriguez, he has the same arm action as Rodriguez, and he lands exactly the same as Rodriguez. He’s the same height as Rodriguez, and he weighs the same as Rodriguez.http://www.fantasysportstrades.com/2008/05/jose-arredondo-scouting-report-1a/

I think to a certain extent his "injury history" isnt as bad as people make it out to be....everyone likes to say "oh he's been on the disabled list 10 times" but lts take a closer look:

from http://mlb.mlb.com/team/player_career.jsp?player_id=150359

1997(minors): Went on DL from June 17-July 1 due to a broken left foot.

1998(minors): Missed the first six weeks of the season (April 9-May 16) after undergoing surgery to repair a broken right hand.

2000: Suffered a complete rupture of his ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb during pitcher's fielding practice on Tuesday, March 14 at Spring Training in Viera... Surgery was performed on March 21 by Dr. Brian Fingado at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale.

2001:Began the season on the 15-day DL with a stress fracture to the fifth metatarsal in his right foot... Diagnosed during an examination by Dr. Robert Mills in Fort Lauderdale on February 22... Was placed on the 15-day DL on March 31 retroactive to March 23... Had his injury rehab assignment recalled on May 1 and made his season debut on May 7 at LA vs. Kevin Brown.

2002:Was placed on the disabled list on August 19 with a right acute bone bruise. Was activated from the DL on September 14 and made four appearances after his return.

2003: Saw his season end after four starts as he underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on April 29... The surgery to repair the torn elbow ligament was performed in a 90-minute procedure by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama... Began the season on the disabled list (retroactive to March 21) with synovitis in his right elbow.

2004: Made his return from Tommy John Surgery and posted a 7-6 record with a 3.68 ERA in 20 games (19 starts)

2005: Missed the last month of 2005 due to disciplinary issues that had nothing to do with his health.

2006: Had two separate stints on the disabled list in 2006 with scar tissue break-up caused from previous elbow surgery... Began the season on the DL, and was activated on Apr. 15... Made two starts before being placed back on the DL Apr. 22... Was activated June 22 for the balance of the season.

2007:Spent time on the disabled list twice with a shoulder strain (June 13-28 and June 29-Aug. 12)...Made one start between stints on the disabled list...Upon returning from the disabled list Aug 12, posted a 5-2 record with a 3.01 ERA in 10 starts

1) Of his 10 trips to the DL, only the trips after 2003 concern me. Bone bruises and broken metatarsels happen to young men. They werent injuries to his pitching arm, so they shouldnt cause him any issue pitching going forward.

2) Im still only seeing 9 trips to the DL after he reached the majors. Is 2004 counted as a separate trip from 2003, even though it was for the same issue?

3) Teams seem to like to put him on the DL, bring him back a couple of weeks later, let him pitch one or two games, and then put him back on the DL for an extended period. I think that makes his trips to the DL look a lot worse than they really are. In 2003, the two DL trips seem odd. Synovitus is basically inflamation of the membranes which line those joints which possess cavities, namely synovial joints (like the elbow) It just seems a little suspicious to me that he is diagnosed with synovitus, misses two weeks, comes back and pitches 4 games, and then all of a sudden his Ulnar collateral ligament tears. Could the synovitus have been misdiagnosed? To me these two DL trips should almost be counted as one. Same in 2006, when the Blue Jays did the same thing, sandwiching two trips to the DL for scar tissue around two starts. And then again in 2007 the Jays sandwich two trips to the DL around one start. So thats 6 trips to the DL that really probably should have been 3.

4) Also, Burnett missed a lot of time in 2003, 2004, and 2006 with ihis TJ issues, but in reality it was all time missed due to one problem, and a problem that a lot of pitchers have, and come back from just fine, and from which he seems to have recovered from well enough.

5) He missed time again in 2007 for a shoulder strain. I dont know the specifics but he finished the years strong, so i suppose he recovered ok.

Im not saying that they guy is a model of health, just that there is more than "he's been on the DL 10 times" when you scratch the surface.

But is that a pitcher you want to give a 5 year contract to? Because that is probably what it would take to get him and I don't think the Sox are willing to go there.

But is that a pitcher you want to give a 5 year contract to? Because that is probably what it would take to get him and I don't think the Sox are willing to go there.

I dont know. The TJ stuff is behind him. The other non pitching arm stuff is almost irrelevant. Other than that, he has had what amounts to one trip to the DL, for a shoulder strain last season. I dont really know how serious that is, but i do know that since he returned from that DL trip (August 12, 2007) Burnett has done this:

45 starts
292.3 IP
263 hits
124 earned runs
112 walks
301 strike outs
3.81 ERA
1.28 WHIP

So he is obviously healthy now. Will he stay healthy? Who knows. But here is the injury history of another pitcher, before he was acquired by Boston.

2000 (minors):had 2 stints on the D.L. with right shoulder tendinitis.

[May 1,2002] - 15 Day Disabled list - (blister on the middle finger of his right hand)
[May 14,2002] - Activated
[Jun 5,2002] - 15 Day Disabled list - (right middle finger blister)
[Aug 24,2002] - 15 Day Disabled list - (blister to his right middle finger)
[Sep 11,2002] - Activated
[May 9,2003] - 15 Day Disabled list - (right elbow sprain)
[Jul 1,2003] - Activated
[May 31,2004] - 15 Day Disabled list - (blister to his right middle finger)
[Jun 16,2004] - Activated
[Jun 25,2004] - 15 Day Disabled list - (pulled muscle in his lower back)
[Jul 5,2004] - Activated
[Jul 6,2004] - 15 Day Disabled list - (skin tear to his right middle finger)
[Jul 30,2004] - Activated
[Jun 17,2005] - 15 Day Disabled list - (blister to his right middle finger)
[Jun 30,2005] - Activated
[Jul 8,2005] - 15 Day Disabled list - (left oblique strain)
[Jul 23,2005] - Activated

That pitcher of course was Josh Beckett. When the Sox acquired him he has had 9 teips to the DL in his major league career, plus two more in the minors.

Burnett has all the talent in the world, but of course no one knows what will happen in the future. Obviously you cant just completely discount his medical history. But i think to just say "No way no how" without actually looking at that medical history is just as bad. Im thinking more and more that he just has a bad rap as a fragile pitcher.

To me Burnett would be worth the risk.

The Braves, who had offered a four-year deal with a fifth-year option worth a guaranteed $60-65 million before the meetings, have also expressed a willingness to go to five years on Burnett if necessary.

J.J. Putz could be headed to the Mets in a three-team trade with the Mariners and Indians, according to major-league sources.

Under terms of the deal, the Mets would get Putz, outfielder Jeremy Reed and reliever Sean Green from Seattle. The Mariners would receive reliever Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez and first baseman Mike Carp from the Mets. They'd also get Franklin Gutierrez from the Indians and minor leaguers. The Indians would get reliever Joe Smith from the Mets and infielder Luis Valbuena from Seattle.

The Indians get reliever Joe Smith from the Mets and infielder Luis Valbuena from Seattle.

From the Mets' perspective, the deal is Heilman and Smith for Putz. Chavez and Reed are simply an exchange of backup outfielders, Smith and Green are an exchange of right-handed groundball specialists.

MFY's are about to add Burnett.

FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal writes that the Yankees are the clear favorite now to land righthander A.J. Burnett. He reports that Burnett's representatives were expected to contact interested clubs at some point today, giving them one last chance to beat the Yankees offer of five years and approximately $85 million. According to Rosenthal, the "Braves have offered four years and an easily attainable vesting option for a fifth year that would put the total value of their package to about $80 million, according to sources. To land Burnett, they would need to guarantee the fifth year and increase their financial offer."

The right-hander had been a rotation mainstay for the Orioles, making at least 26 starts and pitching 140 innings in each of the last five years. Cabrera has a 48-59 record and a 5.05 ERA for his career, and he's led the American League in walks in two of the last three seasons. Somewhere, somehow, a rumor began kicking around the Bellagio this week, and naturally it quickly found its way around the nation. The rumor is that Brian Fuentes and his representative, Rick Thurman, are seeking a three-year, $33 million contract, or even that someone has already offered it.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081211&content_id=3714781&vkey=hotstove2008&fext=.jsp

Can you imagine the shitstorm if the Angels let KRawd walk and then sign Fuentes to a contract that saves the a TOTAL of 3 million dollars (over what the Mets paid to KRawd)? Unless the Angels know something about KRod's health that no one else does, thats seems like a decision that might come back to haunt them.

Considering the Indians just signed Kerry Wood to what amounts to a 3 yr 31.5 million dollar contract, as long as Wood finishes 55 games in either 2009 or 2010, the contract KRod signed is looking like a bargain. Either he REALLY wanted to pitch for the Mets, or he really does have some sort of injury, or his agent is incompetant.

The Braves are on the verge of a major offseason upset.

Rafael Furcal is coming home.

In a stunning turnaround, the free-agent shortstop has chosen the Braves over the A's, according to a major-league source.

A contract agreement is expected to be announced Tuesday, conditional on Furcal passing a physical.

Furcal would play shortstop or second base for the Braves, depending upon which other moves the team makes.

"They're in deep," Furcal's agent, Paul Kinzer, told FOXSports.com on Monday night, before a decision had been reached. "He's seriously considering it."

The A's are believed to have made the high offer for Furcal — four years in the $40 million range, according to major-league sources.

The Braves, however, made a late, rapid push for Furcal, and their offer was believed to be for three years with a vesting option for a fourth season.

Seriously. The problem is now that he might not be as sick as once thought, he might be looking for a starting job. Hell TB will probably resign him now.

LOL i just looked at his contract...the Rays had to pay a 4 million dollar buyout on his contract. If they had picked up the option it would have cost them 6 million. So this misdiagnosis might have cost them an AS quality OFer who was very very cheap. But at least it saved them 2 million dollars :D

Nah...he'll make far more than that additional 2 million signing a FA contract with someone. Its the Rays who got screwed. I'll bet he signs a one year 6 or 8 million dollar contract with someone to re-establish his value as a starter.

He'd have to be willing to take a 3 or 4 million dollar contract to come to Boston.

I suppose Boston could offer him 6 million and tell him the starting CF job will be determined in ST. Maybe the opportunity to compete for the starters job would be enough to entice him to Boston. He has to know that he will get his playing time in RF and DH if Drew or Ortiz arent completely healthy. It would be a no lose situation for him . If he wins the starting job, well he gets 550+ at bats to prove he is healthy and productive. Even if he doesnt win the starting CF job, he is almost assured 350-400 at bats covering for Drew and/or Ortiz, plus normal days off and matchup days off.

Of course the Yankees are looking for CFer themselves, and would probably overpay for him to go there, and outright give him the starting job. F'ing Yankees. :cuss:

Braves Won't Be Dealing With Kinzer, Tellem
By Tim Dierkes [December 18 at 9:27am CST]
Based on Frank Wren's comments, the Braves won't be dealing with agents Paul Kinzer and Arn Tellem anytime soon due to the recent Rafael Furcal drama. Dylan Hernandez transcribes:

When WIFN talk show host Bill Shanks prefaced a question by saying that he knew Wren couldn't burn bridges with Kinzer and Tellem, Wren interjected, "That bridge is gone. I don't have to worry about burning it. The bridge is gone."

Most remaining clients represented by these agents don't fit for the Braves this offseason anyway. But Tellem does represent Randy Wolf. ESPN's Jerry Crasnick has a source saying it'd be "next to impossible" for the Braves to pursue Wolf now. You can find the full client list for Tellem's Wasserman Media Group here (click Management, then Baseball). Current Brave Peter Moylan is also represented by the firm.
