ol' Leif was indeed :Lecture:
It is believed that Leif was born about AD 970 in Iceland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceland),[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leif_Ericson#cite_note-3) the son of Erik the Red (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erik_the_Red) (Old Norse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Norse_language): Eiríkr inn rauði), a Norse explorer and outlaw (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outlaw) and himself the son of an outlaw, Þorvaldr Ásvaldsson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9Eorvaldr_%C3%81svaldsson). Leif's mother was Thjodhild (Þjóðhildr).[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leif_Ericson#cite_note-4) Erik the Red had founded two Norse colonies in Greenland, the Western Settlement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Settlement) and the Eastern Settlement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Settlement), as he named them.
Leif Erikson had two brothers, Thorvald (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorvald_Eriksson) and Thorsteinn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorstein_Er%C3%ADksson), and one sister, Freydís (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freyd%C3%ADs_Eir%C3%ADksd%C3%B3ttir). Leif married a woman named Thorgunna, and they had one son, Thorkell Leifsson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorkell_Leifsson).

I don't recognise the Italian as the discoverer of the new world.
I do. Because that Italian proclaimed it to the world and filed the paperwork.
So he gets the credit. Kinda like copyright. Who files first get's the recognition.
I also don't recognize the Scandinavian for other reasons too. There's
evidence the Phoenicians made the trip earlier in ancient times. They had the gall to go past Gibraltar.
Anyhow! Viva Cristoforo Colombo!!!

1. He was not Italian. He was Greek. From Chios. (Same island as me :cute: )
2. Leif Ericsson can kiss my ass. If he should be credited with discovering America, why didn't he form any long term settlements here? Why didn't he tell people about his discovery?
Because he got his ass kicked by Claremonster's people, that's why.

Do you have any source or link for that?
There was speculation he was Jewish too.

He should not have stated that as fact. It is one of many competing theories it seems: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origin_theories_of_Christopher_Columbus
Along with Genoese, Portuguese, Catalan, Norwegian, Basque, Corsican, or a Spanish Jew who publicly converted to Christianity.
However, historical consensus claims he was Genoese.
Here is the Greek part:
Several historians have speculated that Columbus may have come from the island of Chios (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chios) in Greece. The argument supporting this theory states that Chios was under Genoese control at the time, and was thus part of the Republic of Genoa, and that he kept his journal in Greek and Latin instead of the Italian of Genoa. He also referred to himself as "Columbus de Terra Rubra" (Columbus of the Red Earth); Chios was known for its red soil in the south of the island where grow the mastic trees that the Genoese traded, but also Terrarossa and Camporosso (both meaning Redearth) are little cities inside the republic of Genoa.
More evidence about the Greek ancestry of Columbus include the following:
Columbus' signature "Xro-Ferens" Christophoros is Greek-Latin or Byzantine, and spelled Chios with a Greek 'X'. He also named Cape Maysi in Cuba using Greek words, Alpha and Omega.
Columbus' son Ferdinand wrote that his ancestors have always followed the sea. Unless the Columbo family of Genoa had a long history of being ships tailors or official shearers of sea-sheep, they were not related. In fact, even though they were living in Genoa at the time that Ferdinand was writing about his father, they are not mentioned. Nor are they mentioned in the will of Columbus.
The islanders from Chios are known for their skill on the sea and for the number of sea-captains and ship owners from there. If Columbus was Greek, Chios is the most likely island he would be from.

Thank you UndieTaker. Much appreciated. That was one I never heard before.
History Channel had a segment on that one night and I don't recall the Greek.
Some Italians do have Greek in them since Greeks were slaves in Italy under Rome.
My last name is Spanish ( which is my maiden name) but I am of Sicilian ancestry and I consider myself Italian. Southern Italy was conquered by Spain and was also a Cananiite stronghold and port as well as Greek at one point.
As for Colombus' education it was not uncommon for Jesuits to take children from families and educate them. The idea the earth was spherical was known by Greeks and in the ancient world and his navigation tools were available due to the Saracen Arabs.
