View Full Version : Does Dice K have a shot....

No.
The CY is Cliff Lee's
22 wins vs DK's 18
Led the AL in ERA ( DK was second, 2.54 vs 2.80), playing for a worse team than DK
Lee was 9th in strikeouts in the AL, DK 16th (170 vs 149)
DK has the most walks in the AL (92 in 163 IP), while Lee has 34 in 220 IP (tied for 5th fewest of pitchers with at least 100 IP)
And Cliff Lee did all this while pitching the second most innings in the AL.
Dont get me wrong, DiceK has had a magnificent season, 18-2 with a 2.80 ERA in the most competitive division in the majors. Thats nothing to sneeze at. But Lee has had a better season.
Lee will win the CY
DK will finish second.
Or maybe third, if F Rod gets some votes for his "record breaking" season. Hell, with Lee playing in Cleveland obscurity all season, it wouldnt surprise me to see Rodriguez win it and Lee finish second.
But IMO it should be:
Lee
DK
F Rod
Halladay
and as much as i hate to admit it Mussina.
How it will probably be:
Lee
F Rod
Mussina
DK
Halladay

I actually think he might finish 3rd or 4th.
Lee might be unanimous but some moron will almost certainly give K-Rod a vote. Halladay has more wins and the same ERA as Dice-K and an unheard of number of complete games (8).
I say the order is:
Lee
K-Rod
Halladay
Dice-K
Manny Ramirez

In a word, no.
He's got a low ERA but his innings pitched is barely enough for him to qualify as a leader in that category among starting pitchers.

nope...to many walks causing pitch count to go high quickly causing a boat load of short starts
What if he gets two more starts and finishes at 20-2 and Lee loses one more? Possible?
Although the Sox may not let DiceK have two starts so as to prepare for the playoffs.
One other thing, I thought that early in the season he was being squeezed a lot by the HP umps. Anyone else see, or think, that???

Squeezed???? not really he is still a second year MLB pitcher who has a reputation for being a bit off the plate so he doesn't get the calls....that may change after this year a bit

2 starts???? The Sox have 4 games left. He can't get two starts.
since it has been brought up, what does it mean exactly for a pitcher to be squeezed by the umpires? Is that when a call goes against them that shouldn't?

Veteran pitchers like a Schilling or Mussina will get close calls in their favor because of their reputation throughout the league as guys who throw lots of strikes.
Dice-K while technically a veteran, is building up the opposite reputation around the league. That's not a good thing as far as his long-time success in MLB goes.

Essentially it's the notion that a pitcher is hitting the corners and the ump is calling them balls. That can cause a lot of issues like high pitch counts and early exits. Or worse, force the pitcher to chuck the ball right down Broadway only to get touched up badly.
Dice-K's a profound nibbler. I think he was squeezed last year early on a hell of a lot more than he was this year. I pin most of his 5 inning outings squarely on his shoulders.

so why then is he being squeezed cause he should get calls like Moose and Curt but is not?

You're right. He should but he doesn't because he's still a new pitcher and he nibbles too much.

Well, he's not your typical "fastball to setup other pitches" pitcher. I don't think Dice-K has a lot of confidence in his fastball and is hesitant to use it to set up his array of breaking pitches. I don't know why....His fastball's pretty decent.
He seems he can't win either or though.

Lester has One less career start
Ok I thought I understood but apparently I am a bit fuzzy on this darn it

the umpire will call a ball on the black edge of the plate differently for say Shilling than DiceK, Shilling will get the call while Dice K usually will not forcing a count to go deeper and have to throw more pitches because of this
the ump squeezes teh width of the strike zone smaller for Dice K thus making his pitches travel over more of the plate making them easier for teh hitter to reach
