Mike Lowell said the hip strain that caused him to leave Friday's game has been bothering him since before the break.
"It kind of bothers me when I slow down," he said. "That’s when I feel it grab. I had a cortisone shot just before the All-Star break and all I think it did was tickle me. It didn’t get any better." Lowell hopes to play tonight, but he's also considering X-rays or an MRI for the injury. If he can't play tonight, the Red Sox could use Kevin Youkilis at third. Either way, they're going to have to put a lefty -- either Sean Casey or Alex Cora -- into the lineup against Dana Eveland.

I guess he might sit today - which he needs to do. I'd hate to lose him for a prolonged period of time as there's not a RH bat that can replace his production in the order.
Casey would get the PT at 1B with Youks moving to 3rd.

That hole Manny left in the lineup gets bigger if Lowell is out.

Yup Lowell is out tonight. Drew will bat lead off and Youks 4th and play 3rd base. Casey at first.

Not sure but it worked out ok thus far in this game.
Lowell is supposed to be back in uniform tomorrow. Got a cortisone shot today.

I'm thinking the Sox are going to end up missing Manny a hell of a lot more than they will ever admit! That giant sucking noise you hear is coming from the number 3 hitter without his protection. Hopefully Ortiz can snap the hell out of it and start to produce.

That giant sucking noise you hear is Ortiz is coming off a wrist injury.
As for protection, i give you David Ortiz, September 2006, mostly sans Manny Ramirez:
23 games
73 at bats
21 hits
4 doubles
1 triple
7 home runs
28 walks
.288 BA
.485 OBP
.658 SLG
1.143 OPS
His "protection" that month:
Manny 4 times (the first 4 games of the month)
Wily Mo Pena 6 times
KYooks 4 times
Mike Lowell 5 times
Trot Nixon 2 times
Ortiz can and has produced in the past without Manny to "protect" him. If teams want to pitch around DO, then thats a good thing for the Sox. Lowell and Kyooks and Jason Bay are all professional hitters.

Granted coming back off the injury he has plenty of reasons to struggle. But at the end of the day he hasn't produced and it doesn't get easier for him if he is hurt AND teams can pitch around him.
