Anybody else catch First Lady Laura Bush's speech about helping the people of Burma. Man she makes us look bad. Lets offer help while in the same sentence insulting their gov't. "The U.S. has offered financial assistance through our embassy," said Mrs. Bush. "We will work with the UN and other international non-governmental organizations to provide water, sanitation, food and shelter." good line. why not leave it at that. "The government of Burma should accept this team quickly as well as other offers of international assistance." ok, now we are telling them what they should and should not do.. still good advice. She says the government's performance in the lead up to the storm shows Burma's leaders are inept. ouch... translation.. you are stupid and should listen to us. "I think in front of their own people and in front of the world, if they don't accept aid from the United States and from all the rest of the international community that wants to help the people of Burma that that is just another way the military regime looks so cut off and so unaware of what the real needs of their people are," take our offer or else we will make you look stupid. ugh.

In Laura's defense though. The Burmese military junta is considered to be one of the most oppressive and anti-democratic regimes in the world. This according to most human rights organizations, the UN and, as you just saw, the US.

However, politics is a game of tact and the first lady kinda showed a lack of such towards the end.

oh i have no doubt that their regime is as bad as she makes them out to be. Who cares. Offer the help, tell them we are waiting if they need us, leave it at that. Thats all we need to do... be there for them not force ourselves on them. I feel bad for the people, but thats what uprising are for. This junta makes sure the the military, police and secret police is well paid and maintained to assure that they run routine raids, executions and imprisonments. If you look through history, most dictatorships only start to fall the moment there is dissention among the ranks of the military. In Burma, there is none.

As long as they have control of those particular forces, they can be in power for decades and the people themselves will remain pratically helpless to their decisions.

Sr. Engineer for a company no. 2 in the world for the product we build. I'm doing damned well under GW's economy. I won't even flinch until gas hits $8/gallon.
