Dice-K can be a bust but I'm willing to give him time. It would be great if he was lights out in his first year in the MLB but what are the chance.
I think he will do ok but will struggle at times. Japan and MLB are different and he's pitching in the AL which is even harder.

I think he will do great the 1st half of the season and slowly players will adapt - much like Nomo when he came here. It is after they get a read on him that how he and Varitek adjust is to be seen
I say a great rookie year -

I do, I think having Shilling to be obnoxious to the media, Beckett and Papalbon the same age and as it stands today - Wake to just eat innings - but possibly either Roger or Lester later in the season will take a lot of pressure off him - he does not need to be the stopper on this staff.
Papelbon is a bigger question mark in my opinion because he has not started for a whole season in the Bigs and only relied on 2 pitches to Close - you need a third to start

He's going to the All-Star game. Even though I think Beckett is going to have a big year. He will do a lot better in his 2nd year in the AL.

what is the story on this guy?
what's his normal fast ball (MPH)? and what is this "gyro ball" deal?
any comparable MLB pitcher in stature (hgt/wgt) and pitch assortment currently active?

I heard he is 5-10 185 but he looked heavier then that last week. I woudn't be surprised if WAS that height and weight ealier this year. In my opinion he is going to eat his way out of MLB before the end of the 2006 season. Hideki Irabu Style!!!:icon_eyes

I dont think his fastball is overpowering, somewhere in the low 90's. But he can throw like 4 breaking pitches for strikes consistantly.

clocked at 100 during the world games last year but on which clock - anyway 1st japanese pitcher to hit it
smaller type but large legs from reports and the Gyro ball is the creation of some scientist who say twisting your arm one way and rotation your hip another creates a different reaction on the ball - possible - yes
He throws and old school screw ball - ala soup

thanks for all the input boys........
I have only observed what had been shown on TV for selected game clips on the guy during the runup to his signing.
junk, junk, junk followed by what looked like a spotted fastball -- didn't seem overpowering, but now I understand that he can setup hitters prolly like say a Maddux in his prime or a Pedro during his last good years with the Sox when he was relying more on his changeup
now if Beckett can get his head out his arse and come up with a changeup, we be in business

I think a closer is going t obe tough to find because everyone knows the need for the SOX - I feel if the privately told PApelbon he was a starter but gave the impression he could close again this year they would be dealing from more of a strength than they are today - time will tell

Beckett looked like a bust last season, too.
Daisuke has shown some control problems, but he's also shown a variety of nice pitches, and an ability to strike people out. He got some crappy run support at first. He might not be a 20-game winner this season, but I think over time he'll be pretty good.
Besides, who cares... We got one hot Japanese import out of the deal, it just happened to be Hideki and not Daisuke. :D
SamBam39

He has been average at best and has a propensity for the break down. He needs to be more consistent and throw his pitches for strikes. Still early but not worth the money so far.
EverettsTheoryOfEvolution
05-04-2007, 02:46 AM
The way I see it, he's taken 2 losseshe shouldn't have, due to lack of run support, and now his last 2 starts he won despite givingup runs, so now he's all squared up and ready to buckle downand start fresh!

I think people are busting Daisuke's hump unreasonably. STOP THINKING ABOUT THE FIFTY MILLION. Daisuke didn't get paid that. That was from the Sox to the Japanese team. It's not Daisuke's fault. He's getting paid a decent wage, but not out of line for MLB.
The problem, as they were mentioning on WEEI this morning, is that Daisuke is getting squeezed by the umps. They're treating him like a rookie, and calls that would've gone for strikes in Japan--where he's a superstar--are getting called for balls. That's pissing Daisuke off and making him lose focus. When he gets pissed off on the mound, that in turn causes the umps to get pissed off so they squeeze him some more.
Last night, two guys on in the 1st, 3-2, I think no outs... Daisuke gets that strike call and it's one out and he's feeling good. He DOESN'T get the call, the bases are loaded with no outs, and it all breaks down.
Personally, I hate the fact that in MLB (as well as the NFL and elsewhere) we have a billion-dollar sports engine which is driven by a bunch of half-blind fat or old guys who use THEIR personal judgement to decide a game. The technology exists nowadays to clearly delineate the strike zone and call games more precisely. Or at least provide some sort of challenge to the umps in the same manner that Belichick can throw the red flag during a game. JMO.

I cant believe the RedSox are paying him 20 million a year to suck like this. maybe they should have just signed Gil Meche. At least he is only making 10 million a season.
SamBam39
05-04-2007, 01:17 PM
JD you're right about the salary of course. But it is hard to separate the two. Any way you slice it he is a $100 million dollar investment even if he isn't collecting ALL the cash himself. And his results are mixed at best. Maybe he is being squeezed, maybe he is not making the adjustments, but he is average right now!

Dice-K is a bust......jk. You can't expect him to be perfect. It's his first year in the league and he hasn't gotten run support in a couple of his starts.
I expect Dice-K to learn from his mistakes.

I found this article that might explain why Dice-K hasn't been so sharp the last couple games ...
Boston - During Thursday's outing by Daisuke Matsuzaka, many wondered what was wrong with Dice-K. After the game, he answered all the questions without opening his mouth.
Dice-K appeared at the post-game news conference sporting a sharp black blazer and a joint in his mouth. After seeing Daisuke arrive with a lit marijuana ciggarette, his translator quickly took it from him and stomped it out. Daisuke then took the microphone and started singing.
Apparently, no one warned Daisuke that marijuana is illegal in the U.S., as he quickly singled out a teammate in the locker room, bypassing his translater using English that none of us knew he possessed.
"Yo, first off, Arigato to my man Julian for the jizzle. He show me what it mean to really be American!"
After those words by Dice-K the mic was shut off and Daisuke was escorted out of the press conference. We will continue to monitor this situation as it develops.

The thing about Dice-K is it seems he always has one bad inning a game that screws him over. He needs to eliminate this from his game and be more consistent.

Being a Pirates fan is a peculiar thing though. After 14 years, it gets kind of hard to really get mad when they lose. Sure, when you have the bases loaded with no outs and the next 3 batters all strike out, that's pretty annoying. But usually, you just watch the game, if they win you're shocked and happy, if they lose, you carry on with your life and continue counting down the days to Steelers training camp and remembering how great the Pens' season was.

I went to a Pirate's game back in the early 70's, in Pitt, only thing I remember was how steep the upper deck was, I was 5 or 6 at the time... has the place gotten any better? or is it still the same place

Ah yes, the good old insanely steep upper deck at Three Rivers. Ah, good times. I remember the first time I went there I wondered if anyone ever fell off.
But yeah, like 3 Point Stan said, the Buccos have PNC Park now, which is beautiful. Definitely a great place to go see a game.

I thought it was great for football, but yeah, not so good for baseball. I fondly remember the AFCCG there in 95 when we beat the Colts. It was so loud. People say Arrowhead is the loudest stadium without a roof, but I think Three Rivers could definitely give it a run for it's money.

I detected a hint of sour grapes from the Tigers after the game. Their response to a 1-run CG is "M'eh...". Right. You just got owned by a good pitcher. You gotta tip you cap, fellas.

I think you are right. This guy gets more attention then just about everyone. So naturally people think he is going to be the next coming of Cy Young. With expectations being so high, it is natural to be unimpressed. Kind of like when I saw Spiderman 3

Yup. It's maddening, and I wonder if Dice-K will ever get better. The guy can just put you on lock than walk you right in there. It's annoying to have a 44390438934904390438943$ pitcher give you almost 5 innings every time because he can't throw strikes at certain points in the game. I'm all for giving him time, but its been the same thing since day one with this dude.

I agree he's not a bust he still has time. But when is anything going to change? I see no difference in the pitcher with Dice-K of April 2007 with the Dice-K of now. Both versions are the same. They deliver gems, then they walk batters like they're pitching drunk. I really wonder when Dice-K is ever going to take that next step.
