The Patriots have informed WR Kelley Washington that they don't plan to pick up his $4 million option bonus but are interested in him returning with a reworked deal, an NFL source told the Boston Globe's Christopher L. Gasper.

If the sides don't reach a reworked deal, Washington, a top special teams performer, will become an unrestricted free agent Feb. 29.

When Washington signed with the Patriots on March 13, 2007, the key part of the contract was a $4 million option bonus that the team had to decide on paying before the 2008 league year started (Feb. 29).

If the Patriots picked up the bonus, Washington's contract would extend through 2011. If the Patriots did not pick up the bonus, Washington would become a free agent.

While he did not catch a pass and played in only 37 offensive snaps this season due to the depth and health of others at the position, Washington seemed to enjoy playing for the Patriots after spending the first four years of his career with the Bengals. That would seemingly give the team an edge in re-signing him to a new deal.

I hope they can work out a deal. Not only were the Kelley boosters right--he IS a great ST player--but, if the Pats cut Moss and/or Stallworth loose, Washington might actually be needed on the WR corps. Hell, if Troy retires, and Chad Jackson continues to prove useless, we could end up with Kelley as the #3. eeek

Word has it that the Patriots are finished with the "Chad Jackson Experiment".

That's too bad.. but I'm not surprised. It's alot of money for a special teams player, as good as he is at it.

Gosh, did the guy play more than 6 snaps all season? Don't see how he could have been reasonably evaluated based on essentially zero game playing time (I remember exactly 1 catch), but I defer to those in a much better position to evaluate than I (and no, I don't mean you fan guys ... )

Was it solely due to injuries that he never really launched or was he just a bust from the gate? Who can tell?

Ras has always been on the Chad bandwagon. I don't think they are done with him yet...

Draft day 2002 I think I remember you saying that in the future the Pats should avoid the guy

I've been registered since 1/2005. I know I've never been a big fan of this guy's but was never a big hater either.

heck I have too - Jan 2005, must be some other guy I knew

Ras that is why I picked the year 2002, to make light of it, I think there is really only one hater of Chad and a whole bunch of concerned citizens

Kelley Washington is a good special teams player....but so was Andre Davis, and the Pats survived him moving on. Sure, I'd like to see him re-signed, but I wouldn't break the bank. There was no way the Pats were paying that bonus.

I think the Stallworth situation will be handled similarly (deadline is Feb 25th). If he had incorporated himself more smoothly into the Pats offense in 2007, the Pats would've had a much tougher decision to make. IMO, this will make Gaffney a priority this offseason: I'd rather avoid the turnover at the position we saw prior to the 2006 season.
