this thread is in place to nominate the catcher who you feel is deserving of being on the All time Red Sox team
I will start it off with Tony Pena

I'm going with the obvious choice of Jason Varitek!
Who's the only player to play in the Little League World Series, the college World Series, the olympics, the World Baseball Classic and the World Series? The answer is V'Tek. I've always been a big fan of his. His best offensive years are behind him but he is a rock behind the plate and as Josh Beckett said "He's the most prepared baseball player in the league".
Respected by all his teammates he's been the captain of the Red Sox for the last three years. (Probably longer).

Tony Pena's a great choice for this purpose.
My top 3 that came to mind were:
Carlton Fisk
Jason Varitek
Rich Gedman

I wonder if a majority of us are '67 forward kids (I was born in '66) and forget about any catcher prior to Fisk/Bob Montgomery tandem

'67 is before my time but I considered (jokingly) nominating Monty.

It's funny because I briefly looked back before '67 to see if there was a big-name Sox catcher who wasn't coming to mind but no - I couldn't seem to find a name that was anymore dominating than the likes of a Tony Pena or Rich Gedman.
Anyone else or should we roll with these 5 guys?

The Red Sox have (traditionally) never been known for their catching prowess (exception: Fisk).
I think the one's we have are fine.

I think we need to let the old guys like RG warm the memory bank and see what name rises up from the soot, this could take a couple of days.....
but I agree these are the 5, really 4 names that I picture being on teh ballot

Someone has to nominate Dougie just in case Tim Wakefield makes the All Time pitching staff.
So i guess i'll do it.
Doug Mirabelli.

If Mirabelli gets a nomination then so do:
Mike Stanley
Scott Hatteberg

I was born in 72, so I don't remember 67 but I agree with Stan: Fisk, Tek, Gedman & Pena as my 4th (I was amazed at how he got up so fast with that leg out).

Nobody worth mentioning. As far as Mirabelli is concerned, Fisk, Gedman or Pena may have been able to catch Wake.

well McFarlane, Mike Stanley both caught stanley before 'Tek ever showed up and if you look into 'Teks 1st year really playing 1998 he and Hatteburg share the duty of catching but based on passed balls that year I would have to assume 'Tek caught Wake
Catchers G PO A E DP FP PB

SHatteberg 108 664 61 5 7 .993 17
JVaritek 75 367 32 5 3 .988 18
MRomero 4 11 0 0 0 1.000 0
JLeyritz 1 10 0 0 0 1.000 0

it wasn't until 2001 and an injury to Tek did the sox even think about getting 'Belli on the team
so yes if Tek or Fisk is the back-up to the other and Wake makes the team I am sure either could do the job with the 4 day rest between starts but if Wake ends up in the pen, still no need to worry because these guys could both handle him if making 90-100 starts with the other getting 60-70

Well, he's alive and well, but at 61, I doubt he would be much use to us.

That's what I meant. In the real world meaning physically able to perform on the field.
