25 man roster; Wake left off
By Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff
Here's the news of the day, quickly, from Terry Francona's press conference.
Francona announced the 25-man roster for the first round of the playoffs, and it contained a surprise. Tim Wakefield, who Francona announced yesterday would be coming out of the bullpen, has been left off the roster.
Wakefield received a cortisone shot in his back after his last start, on Saturday against the Twins, and the team decided today that it would be better to let Wakefield's back improve before potentially adding him to the roster for a series down the road. Jon Lester will take his place.
The team will also feature three catchers, with Kevin Cash joining the roster.
Here is the rest of the roster:
Regulars:
Jason Varitek
Kevin Youkilis
Dustin Pedroia
Julio Lugo
Mike Lowell
J.D. Drew
Coco Crisp
Manny Ramirez
David Ortiz
Bench:
Eric Hinske
Alex Cora
Jacoby Ellsbury
Bobby Kielty
Doug Mirabelli
Kevin Cash
Pitchers:
Josh Beckett
Daisuke Matsuzaka
Curt Schilling
Jon Lester
Jonathan Papelbon
Eric Gagne
Hideki Okajima
Mike Timlin
Manny Delcarmen
Javier Lopez

I think the 3 catchers is smart, especially since Mirabelli's been hurt. It's a shame the backups don't make for decent bats off the bench. I guess, in theory, this would allow Tito to pinch hit Ellsbury for Varitek in a key late game spot, though he probably wouldn't do that.

Why do you need 3 catchers in an American League playoff series? Especially 2 off the bench who can't hit. At some point the lack of a decent bat on the bench will come back to hurt them.
I hope that Wakes is really hurt because this is a crap way to treat a guy who is the penultimate team player!

Cash was making the roster no matter what since Dougie's been injured. That's leaves you with a choice between Moss and Dougie. I guess Dougie is more valueable since we already have 6 OF's on the roster. He also gives us 3 righties and 3 lefties off the bench(I count Kielty as a rightie) instead of 2 and 4.
Having said that, we must have one of the weakest right handed batters on the bench. I'd rather have Moss. Cora is an emergency catcher isn't he? :)

If it came down to Cora catching, unless it was the final couple outs of the clinching game, I think we'd automatically lose. I guess since Mirabelli's been hurt, they could have just gone with Cash and maybe Royce Clayton as an additional good pinch runner, in case Ellsbury was already in the game.

Who was the guy that caught for the Nationals that one game, and Frank Robinson had to pull him out in the middle of the inning after he had like 8 passed balls? I remember ol Frankie crying in the post game interview.
It was Matt LeCroy. THATS why we need a thrid catcher.Oh and it wasnt passed balls. It was stolen bases.

Me neither, but I guess I don't usually let little things, like not knowing what I'm talking about, stop me from posting...
