View Full Version : Baseball is a strange game....
Last night Josh Beckett pitches an amazing game, giving up one run, and LOSES the game.
Tonight, the piece of crap, Julian Tavarez, comes in fromthe bull pen in the bottom of the fifth inning, two out, with the Sox ahead 9-5, gets ONE batter out, and gets credit for the win.
It doesn matter that two innings later, he gives up four runs and almost blows the game..and still gets the win.
Hell, he would have gotten credit for the win if he never threw another pitchafter the fifth inning, being the pitcher of record with the Sox ahead after five innings.
If the Sox dont get rid of this piece of crap now, then he will only do it again, and the next time, blow a game for sure.

I'm sayin ... someone else wants him, let them have him! We can keep Gabby in the BP instead of him, and I am sure we will be much better off.

Don't put the blame on Tavarez; put it all on Julio Lugo. The first batter in that inning reached on Lugo's TERRIBLE throw, and Tavarez struck out the next guy and the guy after that popped up. The inning should've been over right there, but thanks to Lugo's error, the Indians got another chance and made the Sox pay. Oh well, at least they won the game.

Sure Lugo made an error that contributed to the problem, but Tavarez totally sucked after that, and it was his pitching that caused the eventual problem. Lugo made the error, but Tavares did nothing to make up for it...in fact, he totally sucked..his pitches looked like little league stuff... and Tito just lsat and watched it.... Dont get me wrong, I like Francona, but sometimes he mistifies me, and many others....
Tavares should not be on this team. He is a weak link.

I disagree, I think he'll be great coming out of the pen, particularly because he usually owns a team his first time through the batting order.

Actually he got 7 outs, but who's counting :)
I didnt think he pitched that badly last night. What is it you always hear people say when youre winning by 6 runs....throw strikes and if they hit a HR oh well. Thats what he did. And if memory serves the ball Garko hit out wasnt particularly bad, Garko just went down and got it.

I agree with keeping Tavares in the pen, we know what he is, with Gabbard he is a starter and why screw with the kid now when he will be better off pitching innings in Pawtucket
Tavares is a perfect 7-8 batter pitcher after that he gets hit, one time through the order and get him out

I am not saying it was by any means a good pitch but I can't believe Garko drove that ball out of the park considering how high and outside that pitch was. I think it was kind of fluky, personally. I think people underestimate how difficult it is to come into the game in relief in those circumstances. I have never been a fan of Tavarez but I believe he can be somewhat successful coming out of the pen and am willing to give him a shot.

Was it a high pitch? I was thinking it was a low pitch. Whatever. Im probably wrong.

The 3-run job? I'm almost positive it was because the hack he took at it was reminiscant of Vlad Guerrero. He just clubbed the thing.

OK god i said i was convinced. Sheesh.I was hoping to be more of a rain man type, definatley a rain man type... yankees suck, definately the yankees suck
OK, maybe 6-7 batters, but Francona needs to be aware and as soon as you can see the difference in him, dont wait, yank him almost immediately. In fact. I would even begin warming someone up when he reaches his 5th or 6th batter... IF he gets that far.
I , just, have never been impressed by Tavarez, at all.

I blame Francona and the coaching staff... I don't know if it is obvious to us watching it on TV than if you live at the game, but in both cases, Kason and Tavarez, you could see they were ready to be taken out but Francona and the coaching staff decided to leave them in for way to many batters. Kason should of been yanked 3 or 4 batters before he was and Tavarez should of been yanked later in the 2nd inning he pitched. He was clearly struggling after the first two outs were recorded.

I completely agree.
But, as some people would say to us, that we re just armchair managers, and that the ones in the dugout know better than us.
While that may be true, in most cases, it is not ALWAYS factual. There are many people that have as much baseball knowledge as those in the dugout but just werent in the right places, at the right time, or had other ambitions, and never got to put on a ML uniform.
I am not saying that you, or I, might be one of those people, but I am not sayhing that we aren't either. We will never find out.

with the lead Tito was trying to get Gabbard the win so he needed to finish the inning
as for Tavares - the error cost him
not defending just saying

Yeah, I think with that big of a lead, you force the guy out there to struggle through it, rather than waste your bullpen.

As for Gabbard, he shit the bed so fast that Francona had no choice but to leave him in. He went from winning 9-1 with no baserunners to 9-5 with 2 baserunners in the span of about 15 pitches. No one can get warm that fast.
As for Tavares, he got out of the bases loaded jam, versus a VERY good offensive team that was on a roll. Why isnt he getting any credit for that? He shut them down 1-2-3 in the next inning. Why doesnt he get credit for that?
Yes he gave up a home run but as was documented in another thread, the pitch that was hit out was VERY high and outside. Not many guys are even capable of hitting that ball out. Garko, for what its worth, looks to be one of the games young upcoming sluggers. Even with the homerun, Tavares did his job. He bridged the gap from a bad start to the rest of the bullpen with the lead intact. He threw strikes. He only walked one batter. He got outs. The Sox won. Thats all that really matters.
