View Full Version : Rumor: Wily Mo Pena for Solomon Torres

Lastest rumors have been that the Red Sox are looking to trade Wily Mo Pena and they are targeting Pirates Pitcher Solomon Torres.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting the Pirates and Red Sox have discussed a deal that would send Salomon Torres to Boston for Wily Mo Pena.
The move makes sense for both teams. Torres is unhappy with management in Pittsburgh and would add another arm to one of the best bullpens in the American League, while Pena would get a fresh-start and also a chance to see increased playing time.

I just looked up Torres's stats and am extremely unimpressed. Still, if we could dump Pena to make room for Elsbury (spelling?), I'm all for it, it's still an upgrade.
As an interesting note, last week, they brought Torres up and designated John "Wayback" Wasdin to assignment.

I amnot that familiar with Torres, but assuming this deal comes to fruition, would that, perhaps, open the door to move Paps up as a starter?

In a word...NO! They already are overcrowded at starter. They need bull pen arms and they are not moving their closer to starter in the middle of a pennant race when there is no need for it.

His splits are pretty good against righties! And he won't be the closer in Boston. He could be a good rightie set up man to compliment Oki!
-EDIT- OK contradicting myself now. The one thing I would worry about is the whole National League pitcher to American League! -EDIT-

I certainly don't think Torres is anything to write home about but at this point, I'd trade WMP for some ice cream cake. Also, he appears to be an upgrade over what Piniero was giving you. I like his 1.36 WHIP.

he is also an Insurance policy for Paps, I mean last year come August we had some issues - Theo and the trio learned well from past mistakes and stocked the Pen
too bad the SS position is the revolving door it is

I don't like it bit...Torres isn't really that good. At least Pena has some upside. I would much rather us get a prospect or something out of the deal. Maybe Pena and someone for Andrew McCutchen.

An insurance policy for Papelbon? We're screwed if that's the case and Pap goes down...

Why are we so worried about Paps' arm? I know he had a sublexation (sp?) last year but he's being "managed" this year and he did a whole different off-season training regiment to strengthen his shoulder. I'll worry about Paps insurance when it happens...Why couldn't Oki be the closer and DelCarmen be your 8th inning guy?
The biggest need on this team is power and/or speed/defense on the bench...Or some other kind of offensive player, like a real #5 hitter. (the last series against the White Sox didn't convince me that the team is out of the offensive doldrums).

my take is you look at all offers and find the best Value and make that trade or do nothing, do not over spend for a player today who will cost you more in the future when the prospect you traded is the missing pice of the puzzle

I agree, except I would add that we need a catcher. V-tek is old and fragile, and history shows that when he goes down,so does the team.
I think trading WiMP opens a roster spot for Jacoby or someone that can be a real addition to the team in a role playing capacity, so that solves the 4th outfielder problem.....OH GAWD! NO!!! IT CAN'T BE!!! WILY MO PENA IN LEFT FIELD!!!!!

I think you're right. The problem is not that we don't have people, but that we have too much people. Selling off WMP lets Ellsbury come up, and that in itself improves the team. Whatever we get back for WMP is gravy (or ice cream cake, as someone else mentioned). Ideally, that ice cream cake would be a minor leaguer, with some potential value, but that we wouldn't need to find an immediate roster spot for.

Because they know they can get more for Dotel. They are just trying to get rid of Sanders, and in their pipe dreams they can get rid of an injured player with a bad contract AND trade him for a guy with WMP's potential.

No use starting another thread...so here is an update on a promising prospect just in case you guys were wondering how Beltre was doing:
Engel Beltre homered twice Saturday and once more Sunday for the Rookie GCL Red Sox.
The 17-year-old Beltre was one of the most sought-after players during the 2006 international signing period. He's struck out 36 times in the GCL already, but he's flashed very impressive power for someone so young while hitting .248/.342/.455. He might be one of the Red Sox's top prospects in a year or two.

[hijack]
A few years back my buddy's wife tried to make him a homemade ice cream cake. She hacked it up so badly that myself and another buddy who'd gotten to their house early tried to salvage it. So we mushed it up into the shape of a whale and went nuts with the icing and dubbed it:
PUSSY THE WHALE
Good times.

HEEEEEEELLLLLL NO! If the Pirates trade McCutchen, I will hunt down the entire Nutting family and kill them all like Anakin vs the sand people in episode 3. Of course, it would probably be easier to find sand people than Nuttings...
Anyway, Torres is a good, dependable pitcher. He gives you a ton of innings and actually gets better the more he pitches. That's why I thought using him as a closer was a mistake. The past few years he's been nearly unhittable as a right handed setup man, especially later in the year. He's also a great team guy. Too great, in fact. He was naive enough to negotiate a contract with the Pirates by himself, without an agent, and took less money when GM Dave Littlefield promised to rent one of Torres's baseball academies. The Pirates didn't do so, of course, and this year they went down to look at our current baseball academy in the Dominican Republic, and found that we need a new one. But now the Rangers are renting Torres's academy so it's too late for that. Torres is pissed because he thinks the Pirates delayed his rehab schedule because he complained to them about not fulfilling their promise.
What can you guys tell me about Pena?

Honestly, Wily Mo has the potential to be the next Adam Dunn, possibly better average. He hit .300 for us last year in limited games, and this year has struggled with even less playing time. However, 90% of his home runs are still in the sky - seriously, the guy SMOKES the ball. It is true that he stuggles hitting breaking pitches, more than I have ever seen anyone else struggle against it. Also, he cannot not play defense, even on my PS2. I should also add that he is much more effective against lefties. I would rate him as such, based on the one and a half seasons I have seen him play:
Offense:
Contact - C
Power - A
Eye - C-
Speed - D
Defense:
Range - D-
Fielding - D-
Arm - B
Durability - C
To sum it up - you're trading a 35 year old, solid reliever, who happens to be slightly dumb, for a 23 year old power prospect, who also happens to be dumb. If you had a DH it would be a much better trade, but your not giving up too much either.

Yeah, it's good to see him producing as long as he is in the lineup ... but he was against a lefty, and he still can't field for his life. I suppose it is nice to have him to rest Drew against the southpaws ... but come on. Come on!
