BREAKING SPORTS NEWS: Terry Francona just announced that Jon Lester has been recalled from Pawtucket and will start tomorrow night in Cleveland. Julian Tavarez is going to the bullpen. A roster move will be announced after the game. The easiest move available to the Sox would be to send Javier Lopez, who has options, back to Pawtucket. --Developing

The other day he said that Tavarez was staying in the rotation. He must have been reading over here, and changed his mind when he saw all of us EXPERTS suggesting that Tavarez be shipped back to Little League.
BTW, Tavarez scares me even more coming out of the bullpen. Hopefully it will only be in mopping up, for one inning, when the Sox have a 14-2 lead in the 9th. Even that might be risky. :)

Well it interesting development. Wonder what this means for the potential trades? Does this mean Yo-Yo is back on the block, with another player? I hope that they aren't trying to showcase Lester for something stupid or big.

I think Tavares has been very good vs teams the first time through the batting order this season and has a history of being a pretty good relief pitcher.. He will see more than just mop up duty im sure, until he proves he cant handle it.

Man if Schilling can come back healthy and be anything close to his best, and Gabbard continues doing his Aaron Small imitation, this team could be set up pretty for the playoffs.

I agree. Lester hasnt exactly been setting the minors on fire this season.

A Lester at HALF strength is far better than a Tavarez at ANY strength.

I just meant that its odd that they are bringing him up now. Gabbard has been on fire and Schilling had 3 dominant innings in a rehab start in AAA and cant be too far away from coming back. The FO has been pretty willing to trot Tavares out there every fifth day, for better or for worse. Why now, all of a sudden, is Lester being brought up? He hasnt exactly "earned" the call up with his minor league pitching. Is it to make one start before Schilling returns? Seems odd that the FO would disrupt his rehab to make one spot start. Has Tavares finally worn out his welcome? Seems odd that the FO would put up with him all season, and now, with Schilling presumably going to be back soon.
Seems to me that they are pushing Lester a bit, which is very unlike the FO. If anything they are over cautious with their pitching prospects. Why would they push him? To see if he can handle pitching in the ML. Why would it matter? Well either he is trade bait, or whomevers spot he would be taking is trade bait. Assuming Lester pitches well, which is far from a certainty, what is the rotation?
Beckett, Schilling and Matsuzaka arent going anywhere. Wakes isnt either, because i dont think anyone would trade anything of value for him. That leaves Gabbard, Tavares and Lester, battling for one rotation spot.
This move just strikes me as the FO "seeing what theyve got" in Lester.

I think that management may have seen what many of us have seen, for quite a while, that Tavares sucks, and that as a starter he is the one that oculd turn momentum in the wrong direction. At least that is what I have seen of him, never likeing him, at all.
I was shocked when he turned in a couple of decent performances and wondered who was wearing his uniform.
I meant what I said, and believe, that a half strength Lester is better than a Tavares at any strength. Tavares is, IMO, a streak killer.
I see absolutley NOTHING of a redeeming value in his pitches.
Wakefeld, again IMO, needs to be yanked when he appears to be flattening his pitches, without hesitation.
MANNY MANNY MANNY MANNY.....

But what the heck are they are going after? It not going to be anyone in the field, so it must be starting/relief pitching - and what is being offered ain't worth Lester.
Watching the emotion that Manny has been showing after a won game, a homer, or a great play in the field or at bat by another Sox player is extremely heartening.
His jumping hugs are worth re watching many times. I love it. Great.

You would probably have to add Youkilis or Lowell in that package in order to get Teixeira
And again, I see his name being misspelled  How come people find it so easy to spell Youkilis, but forget the first i in Teixeira?

Purely speculation but I'll toss it out there for debate.
Could it be that the Sox have been using Lester as a bargaining chip for a deadline deal? Perhaps some GM's prefer to assess his progress at the major league level before pulling the trigger on anything involving Lester.
From the FO's perspective, if they envision trading Lester and he's not a part of their long-term plans anyway, perhaps prior to Schilling's return is the best time to bring him up. If he were to be traded, the recipient would almost undoubtedly want him to immediately join their major league rotation. So this could just be a showcasing.

I still think Gabbard is the showcase, and they are looking at Lester as a long term player.
I don't think they are rushing Lester. He has 71 minor league innings. His stats aren't thrilling, but sometimes stat lines can be very misleading.
Lester is only 23 years old and his potential eclipses Gabbard's..

I tend to think you're right. Gabbard's trade-value may never be so high so it's possible that the Lester call-up is also a grooming to replace Gabbard in the rotation when he's moved.

When he is wearing a uni that says Boston, or RedSox on it, i'll bother to learn how to spell his name. Until then, he is Texera. :)
