I missed Papi breaking out of his funk... I was busy watching the Yankmes blow their game in 13 innings. :thumb:
Blow Jays lost, Yankmes lost... already a good day so far, worst that happens is they're still 11 up, if they win they're back to 12 up...

Anybody know why Gabbard continues to get all these starts, while Lester appears fit and ready in AAA?

I think they are just being overly cautious with his forearm cramp and some of his performances. He has been good not great with a WHIP of 1.31 in triple A. I think we will see the Sox take their time and resist rushing him back. He needs to build strength.

I still don't trust Lester. He's tossing about .500 ball with an ERA close to 4, and he's had some really bad games in Pawtucket.
However, a lot will depend upon how soon Schilling can return, and how bad Tavarez continues to suck. They might end up having to call up Lester and keep both Gabbard AND Lester on the big club for a while...

Yup. 4 good innings. Then 2 straight walks and a double. Gabbard obviously hits a wall at somewhere around 60-70 pitches.

Sox need to make a move for some bench depth. WM Pena .216 Eric Hinske .202 Mirabelli .189 and Joey Cora .281 Only Cora is providing anything close to a major league performance at the plate and in the field. They need another bat!!

I only wish I could see it. I can certainly hear the MoTown fans getting frustrated with Papelbon throwing to 1st repeatedly.
Now Sheffield steals 2nd. Base hit could win it....

Well, this one was probably one of Francona's worst managed games. Some notes:
- If I hear anyone say that calling up Jeff Bailey was a good thing, I'm going to club them over the head with a lead pipe. How does a guy who had an OPS under .800 get a callup? Aside from not being able to hit the broad side of a barn, his interference in what should've VTek's catch was just plain awful.
- Thanks to Timlin having that fluke outing, Tito is going to do to him like Jimy did to Rod Beck: use him in every situation possible. Oh friggin joy!
- Back to Bailey. I'm Tito and I have Youk and Bailey in the dugout. I AM NOT GOING TO USE BAILEY AS A PINCH HITTER! Tito, you uberclown!
- So he "saves" Papelbon for the 13th inning but decides to burn Okajima for 2.1ip and send in Timlin as well as Lopez before Papelbon. What a tactician!
- I don't want to hear "well, we didn't score either". Yes, we didn't score, but guess what? Tito wasn't helping matters either. When will some people finally stop praising this nincompoop and start being a little more critical of him? The guy is one of the worst in-game managers in the majors.

But isn't the promotion/demotion of players in the farm system the responsibility of the front office? I think Theo should be the one to blame for Bailey's presence in Detroit last night.
When Jacoby was called up, I heard (from one of the newspapers) that he would be with the team until the All Star Break...Which makes sense. Then, the call up Bailey because he's supposedly good against lefties. They should have taken another relief pitcher since Detroit is the best hitting team in the league/
I have to agree with you guys, this was probably one of the worst managed games by Tito since he's been with the Sox. A lot of the moves had me scratching my head. A lot of crappy hitters (Lugo, Hinske, Bailey) were coming up with men on base in the late innings...Mostly because they had pinch hit for someone and were higher up in the order. How many pinch hitters did Leyland use? Probably not that many.
I don't think Tito's a horrible manager...but he does have a couple of brain-farts a year.

He doesnt have to, everyone in his starting lineup can hit.

The move that made no sense was taking Pedroia out. Granted, the kid isn't that fast of a runner but he is a much better hitter than Lug-0-fer. If Papi can score from second on a basehit, so can 'Droia.
The rest of the game, Lug-0-fer was hitting second in the lineup.
luso2kx

Actually the moves that made no sense was "saving" Papelbon and wanting to throw Okajima under the bus (2.1ip) then going through Timlin and Lopez before using Papelbon. And yeah, having Jeff Bailey pinch hit instead of Youk.
Terry Francona is this generation's Cito Gaston. A guy who is a total moron managing a game as it unfolds, but was extremely blessed to be on a team that is loaded to the ears with talent which allows him to cover up alot of his bad decisions.

Some of you people would bitch about the manager regardless of who it is. Instead of identifying the "real" problem like going 1 for 19 (or whatever) with runners in scoring position, it's real easy to point fingers at the manager. And while I realize he made some head scratching decisions, it doesn't hide the fact that Manny Ramirez and JD Drew are really hurting this team when they need a clutch hit. Over the past 2 or so weeks, the 3, 4, and 5 hitters are KILLING them!

He's going to keep making boneheaded decisions and people are going to keep making excuses for him either:
1) Because the offense didn't score enough runs on a particular day, the guilt is shifted off of him and he gets YET ANOTHER free pass.
or
2) The team wins DESPITE his bonehead in-game decisions thanks to the fact that the Sox have the 2nd largest payroll in baseball and a buttload of talent.
Why not take a trip back to 1993 and 1994 and check out the Toronto Blue Jays then. Cito Gaston got pratically no blame upon him because Gillick had made a team that basically ran itself. It was after the strike and the big name talent leaving that we all saw the REAL Gaston and why he never got a managing job anywhere else after he was fired.
Think Francona is any different? I truly beg to differ. His in-game decisions are borderline laughable but he's blessed with a talented ballclub that can cover up his bad decision making.
Patriots4ever
07-08-2007, 10:25 PM
So then based on your logic, some of the blame can be placed on the GM. Lugo, Drew, Renteria, WMP trade, etc. Yeah, Gillick assembled a great team in Toronto. To compare that team to today's Red Sox team, or 2006 or 2005 is laughable.
I agree with you that Francona makes some mistakes, I just don't think that he should be the scapegoat in this situation because the FO has made some terrible signings over the past couple of seasons. The only thing I agree with you on is that Cito Gaston was a terrible manager, far worse. Francona is probably the best manager this Red Sox team has had in a long time, especially with the things you don't see on the field.
Francona was not the reason why the Sox got swept this weekend. He manages to win the war, not the battle. We're more than half way through, and there's a lot of baseball left to be played.
