This one has mismatch written all over it. Tavarez could get rocked and Andrew Miller is just the kind of guy to cool off our bats.
Well, let's get rocked I guess (man, I have come up with some terrible segeways for 80's cheese mojo):

Don't worry. Miller's only got good command of one pitch.
Your guys just have to figure out how to hit a high 90s fastball with wicked movement on it. That's all.

Thats ok because word on the street is that Jeff Bailey is starting at first tonight.
Yes, THAT Jeff Bailey.

Don't knock Tavarez - looking at their respective recent performances, I'd rather have him on the hill than Schill.

As long as it's not a junk-throwing lefty, the Sox will be all right...*crosses fingers*

The bloom is off the Tavarez rose.
Despite being 12 games up (okay, 11 after tonight), the Sox really need to find a 5th starter and another stick for the lineup. And that's assuming Schilling comes back to form and both Ortiz and Ramirez start hitting...

Well, he WAS okay for a 5th starter, up until two starts ago. The past two starts he's sucked. Hey, I can't knock the guy, I thought he was horrible last year so IMO he's already gone over and above what I thought he could do.
I like this Kason Gabbard kid, and I'm not sold on Jon Lester yet (he's looked like absolute crap down here in Pawtucket), so if Schilling can come back and be decent I'm all for kicking Tavarez back to middle relief and sticking Gabbard in as the #5 guy.

I said during Tavarez's little streak that he would come down crashing and crashing hard. That's how his whole career has been.
When he was pitching well, we probably could've nabbed a decent bat in return. Now we'll be lucky to get a used pack of juicy fruit for him.

Why don't the Sox bring up Clay? He is dominating the minors right now. The Brewers and Giants brought up their top pitching prospects and it has panned out well for them, the Sox should give it a try as well.

Clay Buchholz fanned 11 while allowing one run in 6 1/3 innings for Double-A Portland on Monday.
It's unclear whether the Red Sox gave it any serious thought, but Buchholz might have been the best option to take Curt Schilling's spot in the rotation. With Homer Bailey and Yovani Gallardo in the majors, he's one of the top candidates for the label of best pitching prospect in the minors. In June alone, he's had 12 strikeouts once and 11 twice. He's 6-2 with a 1.79 ERA, 53 H and 111/19 K/BB in 80 1/3 IP on the season.

It's a real injustice that Curt Granderson wasn't even on the All-Star ballot.
I'm guessing this will be the last time that happens.
How'd Miller's fastball look?

OOOH! I didn't even know about it until I looked at the box score, but the Tigs called up Ryan Raburn!
He hasn't been in the minors as long as Bailey, but he's 26 years old. He was once the top hitting prospect in the organization, before an accident in an off-road vehicle. Looks like he's getting a shot at the bigs!

Clay still pitching in Portland at this point simply makes no sense whatsoever. I have a hard time seeing Tavarez going back to the guy that people were hailing as a "good 5th starter" and Gabbard, as much as I do like the kid, is a back of the rotation guy at best. Plus, chances are that Tavarez won't be traded or DFA'ed soon out of "loyalty" on the part of Theo.
My guess is that the Sox FO have all their chips on Lester being called up first. Problem is that I've yet to see one of his AAA starts that would convinve me that he's ready to come back. Buchholz, meanwhile, has done everything and then some.

First, Tavares shit the bed yesterday. Of couse it was against the highest scoring team in MLB. And the Sox lineup wasnt exactly built to win. But the sky is not falling, and panicking is not a good way to run an organization.
The history of MLB is littered with the carcasses of Cant Miss Pitchers who were rushed to the majors. Every MLB teams 5th starter is going to get lit up occasionally. Whether it be Tavares or Gabbard, right now the 5th starters main job is to occupy a spot so that the FO isnt forced to bring up young pitchers before the FO is ready to. You have to remember that there isnt just the on the field aspect of bringing up Buchholz. As soon as he sets foot in a Major League clubhose, he begins accruing service time. Once he accrues enough service time ( i think its 3 years) the player is eligible for arbitration. So do you as the RedSox GM want to start Buchholz' service time clock while he is 22, having never pitched a single pitch above double A, risk exposing him physically and/or mentally to MLB hitters when he may not be ready, just to (possibly) upgrade your fifth starter, during a time where the team has a double digit game lead in the East? And, when you do all that, have to deal with having Buchholz arbitartion eligible at 25, and then eligible for free agency at 28? Or do you want to maybe let him stay in the minors for the rest of this season and maybe next season (unless injury or poor performance by ML pitchers force their hand), and move those age milestones to 27 and 30? Every year the FO can save having to shell out Big Bucks is Buchholz is the real deal is a year they CAN shell out for other players. Saving even one season could be the difference between signing the next big free agent, and not signing him.
I understand that its frustrating to see the inconsistancies of Tavares as a starter. But you have to look at the big picture. Tavares might actually be the perfect person to be the fifth starter on this team right now. He is ultimately expendable. He is effective some of the time, and i think is just insane enough to not care if he gets lit up. In other words he is a guy whose crappy performance yesterday wont affect him mentally in his next start.

They are not going to rush their number 1 prospect. He just started this season in AA. I don't think you will see Clay until 2008 at the earliest!
