Sox need to forget about last night and bounce back with a win! Gabbard looked pretty good the last time he pitched so let's get behind him for the Sox win.

Maybe tonight is the night Lugo becomes a major leaguer!

After a difficult stretch, Felix Hernandez comes into tonight's game hoping to pick up where he left off after his last start where he scattered six hits over 8 innings in a 3-0 win.

Kason Gabbard was recalled from Pawtucket to start in place of the injured Schilling. Gabbard went 7-2 with a 3.24 ERA in 14 starts with Pawtucket and also won a spot start on May 20 against Atlanta, allowing two runs over five-plus innings in a 6-3 victory.

So Gabbard wasn't entitled to a bad start?

And we should also remember that Gabbard was solid in his last start vs. Atlanta.

Let's keep in mind that he is, in fact, a rookie. Rookies make mistakes, but I have confidence that Gabbard can toss some more solid starts.

theyellowdart
06-27-2007, 01:24 PM
I just don't think that Gabbard has that great of stuff when he is on. I would say his ceiling is at best, a 4th starter. He will prolly be a 5th starter/mop up guy when it is all said and done. Over his minor league career, he has always had some trouble with the walks and that is never a good thing. Gabbard really isn't considered to be a very good prospect so nothing really to worry about here.

I agree. He got the call-up this time because they don't intend to keep anyone up long term right and it won't bother the team to send him back and forth. They don't want to bring up Lester until they have a permanent spot for him. (And yes, I know Lester got shelled the other night).

In 2006, he had a .224 BAA and 1.22 WHIP in the miniors

This year he has a .235 BAA and 1.21 WHIP in the miniors

Where is this "walk trouble" you speak of?

Gabbard's a rookie, these bad starts WILL happen and I'm not about to throw him under the bus for it. We again forget his start against Atlanta earlier this year where he had a no-no going on early.

luso2kx
06-27-2007, 02:47 PM
One more thing. If you guys want to throw Gabbard under the bus for a bad start, but are handing out excuses for Tavarez's last bad start...well, do I REALLY need to continue?

Your Kidding, right?

He has pitched 413.2 inning is the minors and walked 177 batters. That is 3.86 walks per 9 innings. He doesn't have dominating stuff so I would assume he is a control pitcher. Averaging over 1 walk for every 3 innings sucks, Especially for a "crafty" pitcher in the minors.

Bottom line is we shouldn't expect big things from him. Gabbard is a B prospect... Nothing wrong with that... He is what he is.

You do know that Jon Lester has so far pitched 453.2ip and given up 188 walks in his minor league career, averaging 3.73 walks every 9 innings.

Again, where is this "walk trouble" you speak of?

Lester has walk trouble as well... That has been well documented. The difference is that Lester has much better stuff. Very Bad Example. His upside far exceeds that of Kayson. Do you think 3.86 walks per nine inning is not a problem for a soft throwing left hander, really? Or are you just pulling my chain?

I am really confused...:icon_eyes

He's not too soft-tossing though. Fastball high 80's/low 90's.

That's actually typical lefty stuff. You can essentially count, on one hand, lefty pitchers who can hit mid to high 90's consistantly. And Lester is not on that list either.

I also guess that depends on the gun so who knows.... Your prolly right Anyways.. do we agree that he has been a little wild over his career or are you still on the other side?

I really like that you are defending him... It is good to disagree on things and have a healthy debate. I think you have done a pretty good job with your argument...Kodos :)

Thanks. I had Gabbard as a darkhorse coming into the season. While he's not going to wow anyone, his Minor League stats would indicate that he'd be a bit of a lefty Frank Castillo (in his 1st year with Boston). Someone who won't blow people away, but will keep things close enough for the Sox to win. His stuff will surprise some.

From SoxProspects.com:

Scouting Report: Lefty suffered nagging injuries over his first few years in pro ball. When healthy, Gabbard has a high 80s sinking fastball that hits the low 90s with good location, along with a plus changeup and curveball which he mixes in very well. Mature with good mound presence.

Essentially, the reason he had some troubles early on was because of injuries, which dropped him to a lower ranking in the prospect list. But his stuff is actually better than alot of people think it is.

Sure he's entitled to a bad start. Eveyone is. I dont think he is a rookie though. Im pretty sure he pitched last season in the majors too.

Fake edit: He indeed pitched in 7 games last season, starting 4 of them.

But lets not pretend that last nights start was anything more than what it was. The Sox werent going to burn an option on one of the real prospects for one emergency start. Gabbard fills the roll of "Minor league pitcher who, when he is out of options, the RedSox FO wont have any issues cutting ties with if another team claims him"
