I had Cox Cable. I thought it was overpriced and didn't have a lot of the good channels we wanted, like Game Show Network. So, I'd switched over from Cox Cable to Starlight Cable down here in RI. Now I just got a letter saying Starlight is leaving RI at the end of October. My options are now 1) going back to overpriced Cox, or 2) using rabbit ears.

I'm trying to figure out Cox's services, but it'd be easier to map the brain. (It doesn't help that they have a horribly cumbersome website that loops you around back to the same pages you just left, and their site isn't even working correctly 'cause I can't find the damn channel lineups for Rhode Island.)

Questions for anyone who has Cox in this area:

1) What's the channel lineup like? I know that basic cable has, like, 18 channels, and "expanded" has most of the "real" channels you'd want, like ESPN and Discovery and Sci-Fi, etc.,. However, I think we're going to have to upgrade to Digital Cable because my wife likes channels like the Game Show Network, Hallmark, Oxygen, We, BBC America, and stuff like that, and I bet those aren't available on basic.

2) Their pricing plan is confusing. It seems like I can get digital cable for about $71. If I want to add the Internet it's about $101. If I want the whole enchilada--digital cable, Internet, and digital telephone--it's only another four bucks for a total of $105. Well, I'm already paying $37 for Verizon's phone line, so if I'm gonna pay $71 for digital cable and $37 for my home phone for a total of $108 then I might as well get everything from Cox 'cause it's cheaper AND I'd basically get the high-speed Internet for free, right? But does anyone know if that $105 package price is temporary? Is this one of those things where, three months from now, I find out that the total package is actually $150 and it was only $105 for an "introductory period"?

3) WTF is digital telephone, anyway? Does it work the same as regular? Can I still use AOL through it if I need to (say, if something goes wrong with the high-speed Internet)?

I think someone on the board works for these monopolizing bastards--er, I mean, this lovely cable company. Any input would be appreciated.

So are you in a position where DirecTV is not an option?

Correct. I'm in a crappy little apartment complex. It's Cox or nothing.

Another question I have is if my TiVo will still work okay with Cox Digital. I assume it will? Also, if I route the cable into a 2nd tv BEFORE it goes to the digital box, will I a) be able to watch regular cable on that tv or b) not get anything at all? I'd like to not have to get multiple digital boxes.

You can split the signal before you hit the digital box and get basis with a cable ready TV.

I have Time Warner. Just saw an ad that if you sign up now you can get all three for $99 for A YEAR. I'm paying like $145.

I hate crap like that. Spit in the face of your loyal customers. I'm thinking about switching everything and getting a Direct TV or something.
