If they finish the season fewer than 6.5 games out of a playoff spot, they'll know what happened :D
Then, they will blame A-Rod and Torre, thereby losing the 2 best elements of their team, and ensuring that the downward spiral continues unabaited.

April still doesn't matter if you do a 180 in May. April is only 1/6th of a baseball season. We all know what can happen over the span of 130 games.

Right, and you can back into a playoff berth, too, with a horrible September, if you started off well (as a certain NL team did last year :P )
But every game counts the same - no matter when they are played. The pressure is on now.

Wierd, MFY's fan think April games dont count towards the standing as the Septembers games do. Well, a win in April is the same thing as a win in September. I will be laughing if they lost with 6.5 games of the red sox. haha

You're right, every game matters. April matters - April doesn't make or break your team though.

The numbers in Stark's article say otherwise. Yeah, you can still screw the pooch in May....but you base things on likelihood. When your team is winning based on outstanding starting pitching, and you are deep in this department, you have an excellent chance of maintaining your pace.

Numbers are just that - numbers. Numbers didn't predict that the Cardinals would win the championship last year. Numbers didn't predict the Sox winning the '04 ALCS after three games. I understand that numbers tell more in baseball than any other sport, but at the same time, anything can happen, and that is undisputed. Every year there are comeback players, breakout players, busts, great stories. Thats why baseball is so great - it's so unpredictable.

I'm a firm believer that April matters. A team needs to win as many games possible and that starts in April.

Exactly...and while it's possible to do bad in April and still make the playoffs, the Yankees have so many injuries. And even if they returned everyone that was injured, I still think they wouldn't be that good.

Nothing matters until the end of September. When there are fewer games left than there are in the Red Sox's lead, THEN it matters.
You have to remember: 1) the Yanks have already come back against the Sox historically when the Sox led big; and 2) the Yanks have the kind of lineup that can go on a tear and literally win 15 or 20 in a row.
I won't stop worrying about them until the Sox win the division. I don't care if the Yanks are in LAST PLACE at the All-Star Break and 15 games out.

I agree with you. While every win counts. It is important to stay consistent throughout the entire season. Good depth in the starting pitchers-bullpen pitchers-and bench hitters will help avoid big slumps and keep them near the top of the division until the end.

Actually, when there are fewer games left then there are in the lead, that's when it matters LEAST, because the division is already clinched at that point.
Sure there are emotional rollercoasters that get more intense as the season progresses, but every game counts the same in the standings, whether they were played in April or September.
