Official game thread.

Welcome to May Baseball. The Red Sox enjoyed one their best Aprils to date. They defeated their bitter rivals, the Yankees, 5 games to 1. They hold the best record in baseball 16-8. The team ERA is second best in the Majors and their bullpen ERA is tops in baseball.

The unlikely heroes of the Month of April are:

Alex Cora

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n205/oldskool138/cora.jpg

and Hideki Okajima!

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n205/oldskool138/oki.jpg

Let's hope that May will bring more success for our beloved Red Sox!
Today's match-up is wily veteran Curt Schiling vs. Joe Blanton

Now I understand why Manny wants so many days off.

That was a weird play. He hit a ball towards the middle. I honestly think Crosby could have thrown him out but instead he looked at Youkilis who rounded third HARD and tried to catch him going back to the base. Youk saw him start his throw towards 3rd and just ran home.

Why, arguing balls and strikes?

Nasty breaking pitch on the outside corner to Ortiz for a called 3rd strike. Ortiz kind of argued and Tito came running out to make sure Ortiz didn't get tossed but the situation was defused.

No ejections I don't think (I have it on mute)

Mikiemo83

Almost....But not quite. Tough, tough loss. The pitching was all lined up. Paps spoils a great Schilling performance. We'll get 'em tomorrow.

I'm watching on my computer but I really thought that was gone off of the bat and the camera mans' angle made me think it was. That's just cruel.

Tough loss but we were due for one. Let's get them tomorrow.

I stood up, and I put my arms up in joy ... only to sit down in embarassament.

I thought Youkilis went yard - call it wishful thinking.

He didn't. Red Sox lose. It happens. Tommorow looks good.

Over the course of a long season, there will be losses like this (and wins as well). They just put it behind them and move onto the next one.

One thing I noticed was that Paps wasn't lighting up the radar gun. I'm not saying that there's a phyisical issue there...I'm saying that pitching is a strange science. Sometimes it's there and the sometimes it's not.

Paps just didn't have it "A" stuff or even his B stuff last night. It happens. Oki is your closer tonight since Paps threw 32 pitches last night.

I'll take the heat for this loss guys. I was watching the game and after Oki mowed em down in the eighth, i decided that a 45 min nap before i went to work last night was more important than watching Papelbon garner yet another (Yawn) save.

I woke up at 1030 and my wife told me they lost.

I swear next time i'll just pop a couple extra NoDoz.

when was Paps last clean 1-2-3 outing, I think he overthrows at times and is losing his control, walking people

I also think that this was the exception not the rule like Bid said and to relax he is still the best in the MLB

I am a little concerned about the variations in velocity from performance to performance. It's actually not very common.

What I'm most concerned with though is pitch selection and the consistency of his secondary pitches. I'm gonna try and look into this but I feel like he's thrown at least 85%+ fastballs. It felt like the Oakland hitters just jumped all over it. I feel he's becoming a bit predictable. Major League hitters can hit a 95-97 mph fastball if that's all they're seeing and when that velocity dips even the slightest amount, things like last night happen.

At some point today I'm going to see if I can find a pitch-by-pitch run down of his outings. He's relying on the fastball too much at times.

But, if his fastball is his best pitch, why go away from it? That's like saying that Wake should throw his curve or fastball more because hitters are waiting on the knuckler. (Or Schill with his splitter or Derek Lowe with his sinker).

Also, I remember that Paps had a pretty good splitter last year. He really hasn't thrown it all that much.

Well, first off, Wake is a vaudevillian act. I don't mean that in a negative light but it's a gimmick pitch. Second, What do you think would happen if Schilling only featured his spilt-finegred fastball and nothing else? He'd walk everyone. An effective split-fingered fastball drops out of the strike-zone. I'm digressing from my main point here though. Fastballs set up off-speed pitches and vice-versa.

While Papelbon's fastball is his best pitch, he needs to A) Have better command of it than last night and B) Feature secondary pitches to keep hitters guessing.

Remember what happened to Beckett last year when he was stubborn with his fastball and tried to blow everyone away with it?

Okay, maybe the spiltter was a bad example but my point remains the same. A pitcher is going to pitch his best pitch and then mix in his secondary pitches to set it up, right? So, Paps is going to throw more fastballs than his other pitches. Is he throwing too many? I think so. I think he should try to find his splitter or another pitch (curve or change). It will give him something to fall back on if his fastball doesn't have "late-life". I'm sure Farrel will be working with him today as I'm sure he will be unavailable.

Well that was really my point though. If hitters are aware that he's going to throw it more than 90%+ of the time (like last night), it doesn't bode well. I think in general, most pitchers like to establish a fastball early and work from that. Some pitchers don't however and work backwards from the off-speed stuff to the fastball and it's really just a difference in skill set and philosophy.

He's going to get lit up more often if he continues to pitch this way. Am I deeply concerned? No. I would liek to see more secondary pitches worked in, which will in turn, increase the effectiveness of his fastball.

HA!!! That sounded like a 'Nam story!

Ok, fair enough. I did earn my stripes in the early 90's with mostly failing teams and '03 was just plain-old horrific (admittedly I was too young to remember '86).

Ehh...I was only messin' with ya. In all serious, I wasn't freaking out over Papelbon's BS. I just mentioned that I'd like to see him mix in his secondary pitches is all.

There's too much to be happy abut as a Red Sox right now to be worried at all. :icon_pidu

No need to apologize---I figured you were too but I was just making sure.

Edit: Nevermind---I get my SoxPlante peeps confused when they have similar names......sigh.
