Interesting topic, but I wanted to see how the board handled me pasting this bit of HTML from The Onion:

Can YouTube make money...

+ All user posted content. Minimal overhead (a bunch of servers) can make cash from ads if done discreetly.

- Will never make cash off user fees because as soon as it becomes a pay site someone will start up a free alternative.

IMO I figure YouTube can be a cash flow positive business but it will NEVER make enough money to justify a $1.65 Billion price tag.

Google be dumb.

Not only that, but now copyright owners have someone with deep pockets they can sue.

Anything that creates more hits for google will generate money. Keep UTube free, maybe charge networks for full show postings (cause of the space it takes up)... could make a fortune off of it.

For the most part that would be a mistake IMO. You tube is not posting entire movies or episodes of TV shows. If I were a copywrite holder I'd look at it as a free mode of advertising

a lot of movies and tv shows are posting for free because it is hit so often, by purchasing Youtube, Google can start to change all these deep pocket companies for the right.
