View Full Version : Boston Red Sox of Boston vs. the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, April 13th, Friday!

So, here it is, on the most unlucky of days. The game thread to celebrate Wakefield unleashing the terrifying knuckleball on the unsuspecting Angels from the West. First things first: to counter the unlucky Friday the 13th mojo:

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j79/sohopixie6/jan07/isis_ladder2.jpg
I know they're big, but you don't want substandard mojo, do you? DO YOU!??!
So, the Angels will send John Lackey to the hill, who has been doing pretty good, but this, of all days, seems like a good one for him to fail. Our hopes today will rest on the shoulders of the amazing JD Drew and his 8 game hitting streak.
Some Drew mojo:

That, and the stupid bastahds haven't answered my nasty email yet. So I will follow on gametracker, and let you people be my eyes and ears until I get home from work.

Well, Anderson got a hold of one but I'll take that start.
Just to forewarn people, Lackey is the goods. Should be a nice challenge for this lineup--see what they're made of. He's not unhittable like Hernandez was but he's a solid front-of-the-rotation starter.

Well, not if they swing at the first pitch like Manny
That's what bugs me the most about some hitters. Swinging at the first pitch. I understand that sometimes you want to take a guy out of his rhythm but let the guy throw you at least two pitches.

Damn, the bottom of our order is pretty brutal, especially with Dougie in it.
I wonder if Dougie's (lack of) production has anything to do with Timmaah's lack of run support? Of course, with Tek hurt last season, it kind of becomes moot, but just a thought.

I agree to an extent. Jumping on a first-pitch FB can be a good strategy too. If a guy has just given up a big hit, you'll sometimes see him try and get ahead of the next batter with a fastball.
Nomar's career average on the first-pitch was something ridiculous like 40 points higher than on other pitches.
The old adage of, "the first one might be the best one" comes into play in certain situations and with certain pitchers (like Matsuzaka for example).
Lackey has great stuff and he might not make it very easy for the first 6 or 7 innings for our hitters. Wake's got to match him and he's pitching great.

Papi disappointed me there. He showed restraint on the curve to manage a full count and then goes down swinging to the curve!
He's seen about 8 of Lackey's curves now. Hopefully he just lays off of them as most are not strikes (to Ortiz) until he swings.

Well, Tito tried Donnelly, but he promptly beaned the 2nd batter he faced (Cabby) after Wake gave up a single. So, there were 2 on with 1 out and Guerrero due up. 6 pitches and 2 outs later, the Sox are batting in the bottom of the 8th.

Mike... surely you could at least watch the free Gameday online aplet thingy like I do. I also have Gameday audio, but I'm multi-tasking here with the music going over the PC.I was doing some calcs and would drop in for updates, spring time means phone calls for lot stakeouts

Yes. Tommorrow will take more work. Black cats walking under ladders was easy and obvious, but tommorrow....we'll see.

Well the actual bet was "Timlin" coming in, which needs to occur 3 more times. About that, I have an idea--for real. I hate to reneg on a bet and unless I want to lose my job, I just can't wear anoth- I mean......a dress to work ;)
How about $10 bucks to the Jimmy Fund? If Papelbon yields the 9th inning to Timlin to close it out 3 more times? I pay. If he doesn't it's on you.
As a matter of fact, I'll take all suitors for that wager. But if you all lose, you gotta fork over $10 to the JF!

Great win tonight--good to see the bats really wear a pitcher out and stay relentless. They had their foot on LAA's throat and really went in for the kill.
EXCELLENT performance by Wake.

He doesn't get it? I thought if a pitcher comes in in the 8th in a save situation and gets through the inning, that's a save regardless if he pitches the 9th? I guess I'm wrong though huh?

You're right, it's a hold. Donnelly gets a hold too because in the top of the 8th, it was still a save situation for whomever pitched the 9th. There was no save tonight due to the Sox having more than a 3 run lead when Timlin became the pitcher of record.

Totally sucks he dosent get the save.

Saves are nice but he threw 6 pitches, the offense busted out, and Timlin got some garbage-time work that he desperately needs. I'll trade all that for a save any day of the week. Solid W last night for the home-boys.

Nice pitching job by Wakes. Hope he stays healthy this season. He is an innings eater and an incredibly solid #4 starter.

I just realized I titled this thread "May" Perhaps Mikie or UT can properly re-title it to April, for the archives.
