I'm guessing this is a DNS problem. ChiefsPlanet is up and running.
Oh well, haven't been here for awhile. I didn't know we had a NewsBot. Looks like it's spamming us :confused:

Might as well try it out for a while, see if it's overwhelming or not when they're mixed in with real posters. Is there a way you can adjust the frequency or is it just 'you get what you get'?

Well, the other geeks may explain it better. But basically, there's a database out in cyberspace which translates "www.patriotsplanet.com" into a real IP address, which then directs our browsers to the proper server. If that server is down (which is not the case), or our domain name has been lost, or the server IP address has been changed, then we get the error.
I recall that this happened a few months ago and it took a day or so to resolve it.

It uses the XML. I can adjust how often it checks for new articles, but it is really more dependent on how often new articles are written. I can set it up for anything that has an XML link (much like all the news I put on the front page).
Between Reiss and Topix, I don't think the average number of articles per day is really high. But it is not a bad way to get some of these things posted for people to respond to.

The only thing we got is that in Chicago people will actually look you in the eyes and smile and won't make obscene hand gestures and refer to you in some nasty imagery with your mother, for simply asking for directions.
Not sure if that's really charm... It's move civility.

I did do that initally, but after the hours of setting up this board and the confusion with all its settings, I found that my password expired and I had to enter a new one. I have since changed that setting. :blink:
Most of me passwords are the same for MB's, but dammed if I know what they are since I always choose the stay logged in option.
Not making an excuse, clearly I am a moron (as has been pointed out more than once this week). :D

In an ideal world, the exisiting real board will just be upgraded to the latest and greatest version (like this board), but all of the posts and threads and member names and history will remain intact.

Yeah, but we have no control over it. We've asked many times for the software upgrade. At times we thought the change was being made. But nothing yet.
If we were to move here permanently, everything over at the real Planet would remain there. That's a heavy price to pay for better software.

Oh, I agree! I don't want to lose anything on the real board! I was hoping the real board would be preserved intact, with just the newer software adding some enhancements! It would be a real shame to lose the real Planet, all those threads and posts... :( I DON'T want that to happen!

Yes it is.
I believe the issue is the SQL database needs to be upgraded, and a lot of those fields need to be manually changed.
Kyle seems very reluctant to accept any help with anything, I have offered. If I had the access and knew exactly what needed to be done, it would have been done a long time ago.

Like a lot of things in IT, the answer is, sometimes. Hosting sites sometimes will have multiple servers (websites) on the same host (so could have the same IP number). The host has to play some games to know which server to send the request to (and without site name in the URL, it won't know who to hand it off to). For other sites, simply using the IP number works just fine.

I think it has to be related to DNS, because I am unable to even resolve an IP number for www.patriotsplanet.com. This error indicates that there is no IP number listed for this name (as opposed to it returning the wrong IP number).

Define: DNS
(1) Short for Domain Name System (or Service or Server), an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name www.example.com might translate to 198.105.232.4.
The DNS system is, in fact, its own network. If one DNS server doesn't know how to translate a particular domain name, it asks another one, and so on, until the correct IP address is returned.
So it appears that short of needing DNS to tranlate the NAME "www.patriotsplanet.com" into the actual IP address we should be able to type in the IP and at least get to the server....unless the server is down for maintenance or upgrades or is just plain broken. If the server is also hosting Chiefs Planet and they have no issues then it is obviously NOT broken. Of course I haven't a flippen clue that the same server runs both. :blink:
My thought is that it is not broken but merely down for some sort of upgrade as we see on the temp boards...maybe to a level similar to other sites.

It is not down intentionally. It IS on the same server as Chiefsplanet. Until Kyle (the owner of the server) reads my email and looks into it, there is nothing I can do.
